Tyre noise

Featured Replies

I bought an immaculate 54 plate Octavia fsi Elegance about three months ago and am delighted with it providing I drive under 25 mph! Above that tyre noise kicks in, expecially on Britain's notorious stone-chip bitumen roads. It makes a noise as if the car it dragging a sack of gravel, expecially when all the windows are wound up. It's not loud of course but it still irritates, especially on motorways. It is one of of the most road-noisy cars I've owned, certainly noisier that the Fabia Comfort I used to have. The noise detracts from the car's semi-luxury feel.

I have 205/55 r16 tyres on alloy wheels. I notice some Octys have 195/65 r15 tyres.

I am thinking of changing to fatter tyres which may mean changing the wheels as well.

Has anyone any stories of changing tyres/wheels to reduce noise? Has it worked?

I am willing to sacrifice handling for the sake of the quieter life!

A change of tyre can help. I changed my original Contis to Avons and noticed quite a drop in road noise. Admittedly it's never really bothered me.

hi, I brought a 3 year old 1.9tdi just over 1 month ago, and it's as loud as hell, I got some SOUNDX stuff from ebay a bit like dynamat but cheaper and coverd the boot and rear wheel arches. I through I had a whell bearing going on my car before I started reading stuff on this forum.

you guys have already saved me some money as the switch on my CC went faulty until I cleaned the contacts, thanks guys.

just been to the scrap yards today to get some felt, that under lay stuff, to stick in the car.

hope the noise reduces, as I can't wait to get out of the car after driving it.

I feel very let down, I researched the octavia before a I got one, very good car other wise.

I havn't changed my tyres yet

anyway I update after I've intalled all my fuzzy felt stuff

I've got 195/65R15s, they're noisy too on the very rough surfaces. My old car was too but the Octy's engine is quieter so it's more noticeable.

A tenner says you're riding on Bridgestone Turanzas.

The Michelin Pilots on mine are very quiet (205/60 15).My fronts need replacing and will have the same again even though they are £80 incl.vat each

got some rear boot carpets today from the scrappy, cut them and clued them to the rear wheel arches and added another layer to the boot floor.

still hear road noise but it's a bit quieter.:D

I'd like to install one of the rear carpet thingys to the front bonnet under the main black felt, if they start falling off the original felt liner will keep them in place,

are the rear boot carpets fire proof??? and can I install them under the bonnet, it's got to be cheaper than noisekiller blanket at £50 my felt from the scrappy

only cost £10

If you do a search you find a few threads on this subject. The usual problem is the tread blocks on the rear tyres 'saw toothing'. Swap the fronts and rears to see if it reduces the noise. The other thing you could do is get the car checked on a 4 wheel laser alignment machine.

I asked/phoned awesome GTI in Manchester to check my back wheel chamber, some posts state the original setting of 1.45 and the new is 1.20, but Awesome say the back can't be changed and there is some posts in the threads that some say it can and other say can't,

I have a dunlop sport OTA and Pirelli P6000 on the back with two dunlop sp sport 2000 on the front.

I've read about feathering and saw toothing but don't understand it, anyway all tyres are worn equal.

holy cr*p ive owned my car for just over a week and i was starting to wonder if i had a rear bearing going. im glad im not the only one with this noise. when i drove it back from manchester it was quieter with the boot full of luggage but up here in the highlands the roads arent the best and im noticing it most round the town. its an octy vrs 06 plate just turned 20k with bridgestone potenzas on the rear im wondering if these are the original beads.

coming soon, solution.... blueflame turbo back system, drown it out!!

I have the Bridgstones on my Octy Elegance combi and there are OK at present. However my previous 06 plate ambiente combi had dunlops & I thought I had a wheel bearing going on the n/s rear. I jacked the rear of the car up, spun the wheel & I could feel the surface of the tyre was uneven. I put the spare on and the noise disappeared. When I spoke to the dealer the service manager told me that they had changed a wheel bearing on an octy and the noise remained, they changed the tyre and the noise went.

Check the tread blocks to see if the leading edge is higher than the trailing edge, if it is this is probably causing the noise. Compare this with the front tyre tread blocks.

My 4 year old Octy 1.9TDI was also quite noisy on rough roads - this was with the original Dunlop Sport SP1 tyres. A few months ago, as th Dunlops were worn out, I changed to a set of Kumho Esta Sports and these seem a lot quieter. If only the engine was a bit quieter! ; )

I have been running this set up for about 3 months now and the difference is substantial - tyre spec 225/40 ZR18 92W XL with raised rim rib.

1. A lot less road noise apart from the dreaded M42 concrete sets

2. Wet road holding is out of this world - took about 1000 miles to bed in

3. Now running at 2.35 Bar front and rear - seems to the best setup for noise, economy and roadholding.

Yes it can. Micheldever Tyres changed mine on the Octy.

There are posts on here by a user called wheels-in-motion (I think) have a read of some of them then find somewhere that can change it.

Goodyear 'Eagle NCT 5'. Just checking today and I can actually feel the vibration through the handbrake lever, although it's obviously in the 'off' position. Not sure why I can't feel the vibration through any other part of the interior bodywork.

I have now (last week) fully sound proofed the rear, much better, now all the sounds is coming from the front wheels/engine.. So I swapped the wheels front to back and it sounds a lot better, I will be installing a blanket under the bonnet and some felt under the front footwells, and I'm getting 4 new Falken 452 205/55/16 for £220 in macclesfield tomorrow so I'll update after the new wheels and bonnet blanket install.

Hi netmw2003,

What tyres have you got at the moment ?

I'll be interested to hear your update on the Falken's as I also get more road noise than I would have expected on my new Octy. This came with Goodyears on them but I've always had Mitchelins before which I think were quieter unless it's because of a different size or there is less soundproofing in the Octy. It is very dependent on the type of road surface though.

I'm also from Warrington so is Macclesfiled the nearest place that you could get Falkens or was it that you got a better deal there ?

If you do I search on here I did a thread with where to put sound insulation to minimise the noise.

I got the car soundproofed but still a lot of road noise on rough surfaces.

Then changed from Bridgestones to Falken. These are a bit quieter but by no means quiet. It spoils an otherwise excellent car and would put me off another Octavia.

I had a mix 2x dunlop sport 2000 1xp6000 1xdunlop OTA

the two dunlop 2000's where the problem, worn to 2mm in the middle and 3.5mm on the edges.

I traveled to Macclesfield because it's the cheapest my nearly £50 and the searching the threads, Falken 452 are recommend.

they are quieter and I can hear the engine more so I'm getting a blanket the cover it.

Yes, I've followed loads of threads and have noticed a big difference in the boot, but tuck me about 6 or more hours over a few weeks.

I was going to take some pics but forgot.

The Turanzas are notorious for noise here as well.....although I must say, I bouhgt a set of 16 inch alloys of the Elegance-model with Turanzas from 2005 fitted and on my car they have no noise issue at all.....
