I'm quite happy to have a look at it for you FOC if you'd like to bring it down.

would love to but not possible till after crimbo

is it possible that these 2 wires that need swapped round might be causing the problem

No not at all, they're just audio wires. Door's open if and when you want to bring the car down.

okie dokie :)

Mine did the same, Dension agreed to replace the unit, but the replacement also disappeared from the display 2 weeks later and had never came back.

Still toying with forgetting about the Dension and getting a Bolero and an MDI cable.

That said the way the cars been going recently, the dension is the least of my worries.

Did you try the manual text activation as I suggested? There must be a reason for it, I'd love to take a look at your car and try to solve it but of course you are a long way away.

Thanks for the offer of taking a look. I did try the manual text activation like you suggested, but it was already in the correct mode.

I'm not really all the bothered about it as the car hesn't been running right, a tandem pump and fuel pump later, fingers crossed it proves to be more reliable now.

Have you heard if Dension are working on any updated FW for the gateway unit ?

Not for the Single CAN editions that I know of, as they are usually 100% perfect, and given that text did work and now doesn't suggests that firmware would not likely be the cause.

Presumably some element of the firmware must be concerned with "negotiating" with canbus to add the menu entry though? Interesting also that it refuses to work at all when my OEM BT kit is connected, when they both always try to occupy the 3rd slot on the menu.

I don't know much about canbus, but as a software developer by trade, I know that problems like this usually come from contention/timing issues, which holds some weight with the following:

This sounds a bit odd, but I think I've noticed that the menu is more likely to disappear if you linger on ignition position 1 when starting the car. So, when it's working fine, if I turn the key straight through to start the car, I've never had the menu disappear. If I switch to position 1 and wait, say, 5 seconds, then start, the menu often vanishes.

Not sure how/if this affects the diesel driver amongst us, who might be waiting momentarily at position 1 for glow plugs! Anyway, it might be nothing, but could be a clue I suppose.

Mine's a derv but hasn't had this problem. I've moved over to a mass storage device too instead of an mp3 player which might have something to do with it. I'd like to kill the background buzz though. Looks like I'm taking the dash apart again, unless it can be done through the connector into the gateway unit ?

No, unfortunately you need to change the wiring on the connector loom at the end that goes into the radio.

I have OEM BT and a Dension kit, the Phone just moves down one in my car. It is a little frustrating when I tested this myself before offering them for sale, but it seems some cars are experiencing problems.

Well, some good news at last: I finally got around to pulling the radio out today and switched over the ground pins as mentioned above. Been for a short test drive and I think the interferance and whining has gone. Really pleased, so thanks Ben for your advice on that one.

So that just leaves my whining about Dension :) - another disappointment that they can market the same piece of kit/connector as compatible with Stream and Stream MP3 when it clearly isn't "out of the box". Irrespective of whether the CAN text display works, it appears they made no provision for the movement of the CDC ground pin in the 2007MY onwards. :dull:

"They" don't market anything for the Stream MP3, if you check the compatibility matrix on www.dension.com emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Perhaps I read it wrong, but to me that says "any Skoda vehicle, 2004 onwards, with Stream or Stream MP3" ???

Interesting, you must be looking at a different matrix to me!

Can you explain how you did it ? I have the same problem and whilst it's not incredibly loud, I'd like to be rid of it !

Remove 15A radio fuse in fusebox under bonnet.

Take radio out:

- Remove central console trim, starting at very bottom edge, near ashtray.

- Remove 4 black screw covers from corners of radio (small holes at sides to lever)

- Remove 4 torx screws to remove radio (TIP: put some masking tape in the bottom of the screw recesses before undoing them - it's all too easy to drop the screws inside the facia!)

Remove Dension quadlock connector from the back of the radio (and aerial connection, so you can put the radio aside for some room to work)

Remove the blue section of the quadlock connector - there's a tab on the rear and it just slides out

Once separated, remove the blue connector from it's black plastic cover - there's a tab on the side to release it

Using a tiny screwdriver, release pins 2 and 3 from the connector and swap them over. The wire colours are grey and black. Release them by poking the small silver tabs visible on the side of the connector and pulling gently at the wire.

Reassembly is the exact reverse procedure. It sounds quite complicated there but it really isn't - took about 15 minutes to do this afternoon.

Cheers for that guide Guiness, sorted mine today and finally have no interference :) Just hope Dension get a firmware released that sorts the loss of maxidot display sometime soon.

  • 3 months later...

still nothing from Dension and I've now closed my ticket in their technical area as they never replied to the last few requests for updates and I opened it in oct 09.

I've given up all hope of ever getting this to work properly again..... Thinking of getting a Columbus and building a database of music on the internal HDD.....

I'm glad it's not just Skoda users having issues with GW300's (and I don't mean that in a bad way).

I have recently installed 3 of them in Audi A3 & TT models, these are GW300 V2 with CAN interface. So far all 3 of them have locked up and had to be disconnected to work again. They are in 2010 model cars with standard concert II+ radios. When they die they kill the CAN bus between the radio and the car, so MFSW/BT prep/DIS/lights etc stop working. Ive fitted lots of GW100 CAN usnits without any issues at all. Dension say they have no issues reported with GW300, but having read this thread I'm not so sure. They have also been very poor in returning calls and I'm a Dension installer.

Now one of my customers has been feeding information back regarding when his GW300 fails, long trips (to work) unit is ok and then a short trip to the shops maybe at weekend and the next time he uses the car the unit has failed.

Sounds very similar to the problems I had .. loads of my ranting in previous pages of this thread! I'm still using the thing and it's okay maybe 50% of the time. It's a shame that we all went to such efforts to give Dension such detailed problem reports, model numbers, firmware numbers etc. and they have given us.....nothing.

They have at least updated their website now to be clearer about compatibility (i.e. not Skoda!). They've moved their product range on now and I can't see them putting any more R&D into getting this sorted. I wont be going near or recommending Dension products.

Regarding having to disconnect it to reset it, this is what I was doing at first (obviously very inconvenient when buried in dash), but found that removing the appropriate fuse under the bonnet had the same effect (still a bit of a PITA).

I think I tried everything and still can't get it to interface with the Maxidot 100% of the time. Tried disconnecting the battery for a few hours to reset it as well !

I was hopeful for a few months that a firmware would be released to fix this problem, but all hope is gone now.

The short trip/stop problem rings a bell !

The GW300 was brilliant when it worked, but didn't last long........ a bit like the uni-mount I bought as well !
