VRS - front disc caliper bolts failure needs new caliper?

Featured Replies

2004 VRS front pads and discs changed at 80730 miles to replace the original ones fitted.

Car gets towed in at 82250 miles with a dull squeak on brakes

Diagnosed as a corroded/stiff/sezied pin/bolt on the front brakes and needs a new caliper.

I am not a mechanic so ....

should this have failed so soon after a brake change? have searched on here and it suggests the bolts should be changed when this is done.....would I have expected the skoda dealer to at least advise me this needs doing?. They did not and I dont think it was done.

...also how common is this and does it really need a new caliper, why no just a bolt?, both may need doing, so the quote is about £75 per caliper, 1.5hrs labour and vat

sorry I really need to get clued up on car mechanics but any help or advice would be appreciated. OK things fail but its been off the road 5days now.

Sounds to me more like a seized caliper piston rather than the carrier bolts. Possibly someone stripped a thread or cross threaded a bolt, it can happen. If you don't know too much about cars, don't mess about with brakes. I would change the front brakes as a pair.

I'd get hold of all the paperwork you can on the work that was done, and head back the the dealer. If you suspect something hasn't been done that should have been, there's no point in scoping out prices for replacements if the fault's down to their negligence.

(NB: FWIW, I don't know that they have been, it just sounds like it from the OP's post...)

thanks for your thoughts ...

Both front brake discs and pads were changed as additional to the 80,000 mile service at a Skoda retailer.

I will be heading back to the dealer, as I have since spoke to the AA and they said they should have been checked when the calipers were off the vehicle and the new brakes set up just over a month ago. I will need to have to ask for the parts they take of the vehicle.

I am 99% sure they said they could not get the bolts or sliders seperate so had to order a whole caliper but they only needed a bolt.

I accept parts fail and if things need replacing that happens.

However I now think I should suggest they fit any parts free for this now and also ask why bolts are not seen as a seperate part. The car has now been off the road for 5 days now. I just felt more confident if I knew the calipers should have been checked when the brakes were changed.

if its the caliper slide pins, i'm sure they are available separatly as a kit, if not, the brake carrier is deffo available without buying the whole caliper assembly

the bolts that hold the caliper to the carrier should have been changed when the brakes were replaced as they come with the pad kit

you really need to find out exactly whats at fault , then report back here

Hmmmmm ... for the second day running the delear says the wrong part has been picked, so will be another day off the road while they ask them to send the corrrect one.

It appears to be the front carrier with a securing pin that is the part needed, the pin has corroded and started to seize causing the noise.

They assure me they could not have fitted the pads if this was faulty at the time, (as they cant fit them properly if it does not) however it is something that goes after a period of time and stated was working when pads/discs were replaced last month (august) else they would have told me. To be honest been with them 4 years and they do report things they pick up and are good in telling me when they think anything will need to be replaced and when (eg after so many thousand miles/next service)

I have asked to have the parts they replace.

if the pin is not totally seized , it is very easy to clean up and regrease, new rubber bellows are available if these are split allowing water ingress
