Temperature gauge problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Whilst driving at 55 up a quite steep hill today my gauge reading went from 90 to 130 degrees and the warming light came on.

I pulled over at the top and turned everything off, left the car for 10 minutes then drove the 1/2 mile back to home with no issues.

On the driveway I left the car running for another 15 minutes with the temp guage firmly on 90 and not moving. Opened bonnet to check some things...

Fans started running for a while and then stopped

Coolant levels were fine

Heat coming out of blowers

Top radiator hose was hot (didn't check bottom)

All the time the car was running the gauge did not move from 90 degrees.

Confused as to what could have caused the gauge to rise up so much and then be fine when I restart the engine.

Maybe coolant sensor?

Any help would be appreciated

Jon

Sounds like the water pump maybe on the way out. The plastic impellers tend to break up.

To test the pump, take the return off the expansion tank and run the engine up to about 2000RPM. You should get a steady stream out of the pipe.

Wow , you have to be impressed with the helpfull replies here

I agree with the above too

After extensive and depressing reading last night I am starting to think this too.

Annoying that the belt and tensioner were replaced in March at a dealers but they didn't bother with the pump. Now I've got it all to replace again.

Yay

Thanks for the advice.

On a funnier note, it was a bit of a comedy job to get 3 child seats, a wife and a 6 foot 2 man in a peugeot 306 this morning, plus with it being wifeys car I had the privilage of cramming myself into the back.

Fingers crossed it will get fixed tomorrow.

Jon

Hi JOn

It sounds like it needs to be done quickly then?

Sorry for the issue though

This is the reason why we always do the water pump at the same time as the service.....

Fingers crossed for you my dear

Sarah

Some good news; you won't need to replace more than the belt, and if you can keep the coolant off it, you won't even need to do that.
