Should you mufflerectomy or not?

Featured Replies

Ive decided to write this little thread just to talk about mufflerectomy's.

Its a great mot for those who are on a cheep budget and dont mind a bit of DIY.

For those who dont know what a mufflerectomy is, it is basicly chopping the backbox off and replacing it with a straight pipe.

I have had mind de-muffled for a coulpe of days now, and I am glad I did it. (pics and vid to come).

All I did wat order 2x 30deg bends and 1x 1M straight and some clamps from Merlin motorsport ... Jetex Mild Steel DIY Exhaust Parts from Merlin Motorsport

I think it was 2.5inch, but you had better check (mine is a vRS).

And I got a cheep tip from Halfords, just to make it look nice.

It didnt take long to do, nor was it hard (I have a welder), and the sound now is far from your normal derv.

Have a look on youtube for videos, but the trouble is with that is quite offten the camera takes the sound away a bit.

Anyway, after the novelty had ward off a little with the rawing my car now made, I drove to my mum and dads (50miles along the foss), and got better than normal mpg!

Not only that but the turbo doesnt lag so much and boost seems to flow in, rather than off then on.

I was worried about the debate involving de-cating and blowing turbos, thinking it might do some damage to the turbo with not a lot of back pressure, but I have a boost gauge and it doesnt overboost, so I am all round chuffed.

This is a great mod to do, and I recommend anyone to do it that is able to do it.

Over all, its given me more performance, better mpg, but best of all, its given me that petrol exhaust note ive missed so much.

I asked Charlie about this, the owner of Pro-speed in Cardiff.

Needless to say, he wasn't impressed.

Why wasnt he impressed?

Lofty, how much did it cost in total to do would you say?

Turbo lag with a VNT turbo shouldn't be noticeable unless the VNT is sticking. Better MPG after lobing off the back box, something wrong somewhere. did you read up on exhaust scavenging for your engine before you broke out the hacksaw?

because then they can't sell you £500 's worth of MILiTec or whatever is the current craze, welcome to the world of cheapskate tuning:D

I plan to get rid of the lot and have a straigh through pipe. The noise it makes is ace :P

This is the car i want my VRS to sound like

I kept a small back box on mine but de-catted. The ickle back box does a good job of stopping booming without being too restrictive.

You want to make your vRS sound like its killing cats that have small little cat whistles? oooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh k

have been in andys vrs with this done, sounds quite mental.

Remap it, then decat it and straight through the exhaust. Then drive it like you stole it everywhere... Is more like the recipe for killing the turbo.

If you've still got the cat in there, it is providing a limiter feature for the standard, tiny, breathless, fragile turbo. ;)

I thought that about VNT too but it is defenatly more progressive.

Better MPG makes sence, theres less weight and you dont need to acclerate for as long to get up to the desired speed.

It cost about £65-75 roughty.

But you could do it for cheaper. I got a 1m straight from merlin, but you can get 3m for half the price at APD than merlin motorsport.

Dave

Did the straight through ages ago - even before upgrading the turbo (TD stage2). Fun fairly cheap mod, works well...
