Which engine for DSG?

Featured Replies

Hello peeps,

After years of Skoda ownership and my banging on about how great they are my aunt and uncle are thinking about gettin the octavia.

They do about 4-8k miles a year and want an auto no point gettin a diesel for the amount of mileage they do?

Which engine is the best to buy? Anyone have some typical running costs etc.

I suggested the 1.4TSi with DSG anyone have one or would the 1.8TSi DSG be a better option?

Thanks

Mike

This may sound a bit off but it's not meant that way:)

The best thing you/your aunt & uncle can do is to make a short list of the engines they can afford to run then go and test drive them

With all the best will in the world one person's opinion is exactly that. That opinion however it was formed may be totally different to their's

But as it's opinions you want i would say the 1.8TSi DSG as a whole package it's far far better in my humble opinion

But honestly a test drive is definately the best way they can decide :)

Carl,

not at all, dont worry I will make sure they test drive both, just looking at really any comments owners have of the engines.

I think on paper they are more interested in the 1.8 or atleast my uncle is, well he rather fances the vRS but I dont think the Mrsus will approve lol

Any opinion is useful

Thanks

The 1.8 would be the better of the two just for how effortless everything will be in the car which will make for a more pleasurable drive.

But a test drive is the best way they can make up their mind.

And if your Aunt doesn't like the 1.8 just tell your uncle to make a "mistake" on the ordering form and then when it turns up she will never know anyway :D

The 1.8 is £25 more VED and group 12 insurance. The !.4 is group 8 (E/16E).

Don't you believe it!

The 1.4TSi is very pleasurable and effortless drive and taking into account emissions, VED, mpg and insurance it is the better all round package especially when paired to the 7 speed DSG.

That is why its demand is so high. If you can find one, try it and prepare to be amazed.

I've heard some complaints about the engine being too weak and / or shaky, when DSG wants you to drive the car with a little over 1000 rpm.

I would definitely go for 1.8TSI.

.

That is certainly not the case in my experience, the engine's torque figures bear that out and the 7 speed DSG is a perfect partner for it. "Weak and shaky" it is not.

I can't comment on the 1.4 TSI with the DSG but it's certainly got more than enough power with the manual. Whilst it's always nice to have a bit more power it's up to each individual to justify if it's worth the extra cost in purchase, road tax and insurance. I decided I couldn't but I can understand those who can. From the reviews I've read they are both considered to be great engines.

I had to make a similar decision recently and couldn't find a local dealer with the either spec so ended up testing a 1.8 manual with sport suspension and a 1.9tdi DSG.

I had totally different driving experiences in each making my final decision very difficult but after a lot of consideration I ended up ordering the 1.8 DSG with sport suspension as it had a lot less roll and better handling. I never got to try a 1.4 as none were available. I suppose the dealers cant stock every combination and the manuals are always going to be more popular.

Delighted with my Vrs CR TDI DSG.

Just had the thing re mapped by Will at P torque. Shifting up the box is now a lot quicker and smoother.

Driving briskly, by the time you are in sixth, you are dangerously close to losing your licence

It's bloody fantastic

personally I would suggest the 2.0TDI DSG but as moch as my uncle would be happy with that my aunt does not like the nasty smell on her hands!

I think they will probably go for the 1.8 as they are coming for a Jag S-Type 4.0V8 so I'm guessing they want a little bit of poke

would be interested in a write up if you get a chance to make one or details of the remap

Don#t write off diesel totally - they may only do 5K a year but the price differential between diesel and petrol is getting closer all the time and the resale value >may< tip the balance. Worth considering IMHO.

My father runs a Fiat Panda 1.3 Sporting which has the little multijet diesel - same as the GM one - gear driven camshafts etc. Insurance group 3, £30 a year tax!!

The fact its remapped to almost 90bhp is beside the point......

Anyway, worth considering diesel options. The 2.0 CR 170 DGS is smooth as silk and unless you told your aunt it was a diesel, she'd never know!

Got to agree. Not had the remap so can't comment on that but the rest is spot on.

Well after test driving the diesel and the 1.8TSi (could not find a 1.4TSi to test drive) My aunt and uncle are now officially Skoda owners!!

Just put down a deposit on a Octavia 1.8TSi DSG Estate L&K in silver. Car is ready to pick up on the 1st of March for the new reg.

Result, and a nice choice. I'm sure they won't be disappointed

I'm sure they wont, they was going for the 1.4TSi DSG but my uncle made the mistake of test driving the 1.8TSi and the dealer waved a very good deal under his nose and the rest as they say is history! Just trying to convince him to sign up on here ;)

Generally very happy with my 1,8 DSG Elegance, it's got the SS upgrade with the 17" Pallas wheels as well, like I said in a couple of threads elsewhere the DSG isn't much cop in snow, that's the only real bugbear I have with it.

The performance on a nice dry road is good, it can be a real pussycat one minute, yet a slip of the foot it's off like a shot, especially in Sport mode. :giggle:
