Intermittently immobilised

So recently every now and again the immobiliser light has flashed when I have tried to start the car. I've tried with both keys and it doesn't make a difference. One minute it won't work, and the next one it will. So, 3 questions:

1) The emergency override code - on my spare key I have a black tag that has a string of 17 digits/letters. Underneath this is a four digit number. Is this the code?

2) Because it is an itntermitant fault, what does this point too? I would guess not the keys as it happens with both of them. Is it the wiring loom I have read about?

3) If I go along to a dealer, are they going to be able to plug their magic box in and read a fault code straight off, or will there be lots of umming and aaring?

Cheers helpful people!

1) Yes you'll be pleased to know that is your code - known as the SKC.

2) It could be the wiring to the reader coil, the reader coil itself or even the instrument cluster

3) There would be much umming and arrrring!!

Thanks. So now I know my code I can at least start my car if it won't go.

Guess I have to bite the bullet and get to a dealer.

Are there any tests I could do myself to try and diagnose the problem?

This thread should help:

It's likely that you'll just get confirmation of a weak key signal and engine start blocked by immobiliser faults showing, which you already know.

If you feel confident enough the cheapest option would be to replace the read coil loom. If you are not that confident, buy a loom and get an auto electrician to fit it, whose labour rate should be cheaper than the dealers.

Can anyone recommend a good auto electrician then? I live in Evesham, so can do anywhere in Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and the West mids!
