Super quick question

Featured Replies

I need to know what should 'officially' be done on a second variable service at 34k miles please. My local dealer wants £300 for the service, my alarm bells are ringing. Is there anywhere I can find the required parts list for the service?

Thanks.

Err, your service booklet???

mk1 vrs only done 34k must be a late one!

Good point, but I was at work at the time and the service booklet was at home. The independent garage I called for a rough estimate needed to know today in working hours, hence my question.

In the end I called a dealership and was told longlife oil, oil filter, pollen filter and brake check. Doesn't seem much for the money.

According to the salesman - "The last in the country!". Yeah right...;)

The thing with variable servicing is that sometimes it makes sense to change things at a lower mileage than recommended in the book. Your car at 34000 miles is theoretically 6000 miles too early for the 40000 mile items such as spark plugs and the air filter, however they would be well overdue by the time the next service comes about at 51000 miles.

In addition to what you have detailed in post #4, you'll need to add spark plugs, fuel filter and an air filter. The brake fluid also needs replacing every 2 years and you might want to think about the cam belt at 4 years which also brings up the water pump and a coolant change.

Also in what way were the dealer going to check the brakes? For £300 I would hope that they would remove all the wheels, clean the wheel/hub mating surfaces, remove the pads and carriers front and rear and thoroughly clean and grease the appropriate parts. Somehow I think it may be a case of peering through the wheels with a torch to check the pad thickness. We've seen plenty of 4/5 year old lower mileage dealer serviced cars where the wheels have never been removed.

Thanks for the input.

I replaced the air filter a couple of months back as a matter of habit and the fuel filter sprung a leak over the summer and was replaced by the RAC chap. The independent garage I've now booked it in at has been instructed to replace the brake fluid, so I guess that leaves the spark plugs.

The car is also booked in at the aforementioned dealers for the cambelt and water pump anyway, as they were very competetive on that one for some reason. So after what you listed, I only need the plugs.

Many thanks.:D

As you are up North, if the dealer in question is Derek Slacks, they do indeed strip, clean and lubricate the brakes (i.e. they service them properly!), which is not actually required by the Skoda service instructions as they only require an inspection which does not require removing the wheels!
