Gearbox going to drop out??

Featured Replies

We are noticing a trend on gearbox failures, that is not related to remaps. It's almost point to point obvious/proovable aswell. Except we can't afford the gearboxess to test/proove.

Sorry to hijack the quote above, don't know if this is elsewhere, but....

On pulling away from standstill theres a loud knock that sounds like it's coming from the bottom lefthand area of the engine bay (right hand area as you open the bonnet and look in).

It's slowly been getting worse to the point where it now does it about twice as you move away.

It's been in at Jacksons twice and they can't find the source of the problem, but know it's there. They mentioned gearbox as a possible cause but just keep going until something breaks

Is this related to the above quote, does anyone have any more experence on this?

Si,

have they checked it's no the ARB problem?

Must admit not being to confident in Jacksons fault finding ability. Told them my seat creaks but they could find nothing.

Also I dont believe they changed my coil packs when they should have done under Skodas direction/advissory note.

Just a thought, have you checked the wheel nuts are tight?

Also the nut on the end of the drive shaft?

Yes all wheel nuts are tight, checked almost weekly after a scary incident in my previous car.

ARB, Jacksons say they have checked and tightened.

Whether they have or not, who knows?

They also said they tightened all accessible bolts on the gearbox mountings but there was no/little movement in them.

Not sure about the drive shaft one, can i easily check this myself?

You can check the nut on the end of the drive shaft, but you will need a socket that fits and a torque wrench.

Perhaps someone can advise what the torque value should be for the driveshaft nuts on the Octy.

I know on the early Golf's it was about 160 lbft but the later cars seem to now have a two stage tightening sequence.

On Mk4 golfs it is:

Stage 1 221 lbft

Stage 2 Slaken nut by 180 degrees

Stage 3 37 lbft

Stage 4 tighten by another 45 degrees

If you dont have a torque wrench, perhaps you could ask the dealer who has been helping you to check them.

Also check the bolts on the other end of the driveshaft.

If this is it, is this potentially dangerous?

Is it likely to leave me stranded somewhere?
