Heated Wing Mirror Problem

Featured Replies

I have a problem with my Drivers side heated mirror. It seems to be barely working on the inside edge (where the power connections go to), it's not having any affect on the rest of the mirror.

The Passangers side one is working perfectly. I removed the Drivers side Mirror this morning, there's 12V at the power cables. The resistance of the matrix is 3kOhms IIRC.

Any tips or is it a new matrix?

Do you have to buy a "whole" mirror or can you buy the matrix on its own?

Any idea of costs?

My driver's side one would only partly de-mist the mirror, so I got it changed under warranty.

I may be wrong but is the element not bonded to the glass?

At which point I think you're looking at a new piece of glass.

Yeah I think you're right. I believe most of the problems like the one mentioned above are caused by the element coming away from the glass and so failing to heat the glass properly.

I'd think in that case if you're out of warranty it could be worth popping the glass out and seeing it if can't be reattached with a suitable high temperature adhesive.

I had another look,

the battery in the meter was low so changed and re-took measurements,

Resistance = 114 ohms

I decided to remove the passangers side mirror and that was reading 8.2 ohms

Looks like the metal tabs on the back that the cables connect to have partially come away from one side of the heater matrix. They are very delicate and I gather this is due to previous efforts to change a damaged indicator unit. I tried a fix, by removing the top coasting of the heater matrix to get at the conductor, dabbed some solder on over the top and tried reconnecting the tab. After this I was getting just over 10 Ohms. It did seem to work when I put it back on, but I think it may stopped working again but not sure.

New unit is approx €75 :(
