DSG Gearbox oil change

Featured Replies

Hi, I am just planning ahead , my 2007 tdi will be due a change of DSG gearbox oil a few months from now ( 40,000 miles ). It looks to be quite costly at the main dealers. Has any one changed the oil themselves or an independant garage ?

If so was it much cheaper ? I suspect the oil is costly and it takes 7 odd litres of it I am led to believe.

Hi, I hate paying over inflated main dealer labour rates, but unless your independant has the VAG tool for removing/filling the oil and is familiar with the process I would bite the bullit and stick with the main dealer. The oil itself is also expensive, there isn't really a cheap way around it. The price in Ireland is approx. 200euros.

I did the change myself. Made my own tool..real easy for about £20 and bought 6 litres of oil from dealer for about £10 +VAT / litre.

In the end the DSG used less than 5 litres.

14mm allen key required to remove the DSG sump plug on my car. That cost another £6 from a tool supplier.

Giving DSG an enema !

Okay a quick update.... I made up my own DSG oil change rig. Used a drilled out DSG plug (bought from dealer) into which I epoxyed a plastic fitting. (ref pic).

It worked 100%, but was perhaps whole rig was over kill. I have been thinking what else would work almost straight out of the box.

No do not laugh or ask how I came by this, but caught a glimpse of this emena kit which looks ideal.

All that's needed is to buy a drain plug, drill it out for the barbed fitting on the plastic valve so it's a push fit and expoxyed to secure.

Viola... cheap deposable clean refill tool.

As required, pour each 1litre of oil into the bag.

To help oil flow more easily, let the 1 litre bottles sit in warm water for a several mins.

Use an infra-red thermometer to read the DSG casing temp.

That all looks very easy...................if your name is McGyver !!

I've been quoted about £150 IIRC by an independent- I asked at my 30k service. The oil and filter is quite expensive.

Parts should cost no more than £80 incl Vat for 6 litre oil and filter incl O ring.

We charge £192inc VAT at my dealership (VW) for DSG oil change, if that helps you all put it into perspective.

Assuming, your company is eligible for a huge discount on parts and the job only take 40 mins at most using hoist and competent mechanic, £192 + Vat looks over the top. Local VW garage here uses trainees for such jobs incl cambelt changes. They are paid minimum wage of less than £8/hr !

I've just been quoted £151 (inc VAT) for a 40,000 mile DSG service.

That's at the Skoda dealer. No one else seems to be willing to touch it with a barge pole.

I even tried an independant garage specialising in Volkswagens, which will also service Skodas, but they wouldn't touch it. They won't touch a DSG gearbox on a VW either.

£192inc not plus

Book time is 0.9hrs (@ £110+VAT P/H)
