How should a vrs be driven?

Featured Replies

Will do this from now:)

Cheers for the quick reply:thumbup:

It is generally good practice to start a car with the clutch pressed anyway. Although the gearstick might look/feel like it is in neutral the gearbox might not be!

It is something I have always done and there is a noticeable difference in how a car starts with the clutch up and down.

I think I can remember a thread a couple of months ago where some of the guys on here said it was a good idea to do this and some thought not.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Yeah, the manual for my (standard) Fabia says to do it, so I do! :P  :)

That, plus it helps if you've left it in gear and forgotten/not realised...

Well done for RTFM:thumbup:

If only more people would, what would we talk about on here:rofl:

this one? <==============clicky-clicky:D

Thanks. :) Although, in reality, it's down to me not having enough driving experience (about 1 month post-test) to be able to intuitively know how all the controls work..! :o

Being a bit of a sad bloke (and having two diesel cars which aren't Fabias :)), I find It's useful to have a glance at the torque graph for your engine. I find you achieve maximum progress when each change up dumps you back into the middle of the torgue curve again. On the 3.0 V6 Signum, that's around 3.5-4K, on the 1.9 Astra, around 3.5. There's very little point (unless you're alongside an HGV at the end of a dual carriageway, with nowhere else to go) in revving the nadgers off a diesel -by the time you hit the redline, you'll be way off maximum torque.

Max torque for the VRS engine is apparently at 1,900 rpm, so about that then?

Maximum torque is available at 1900, yes - but that doesn't quite tell the whole story :)

You'll make perfectly good progress using the power and torque available upto 3000. If you need quicker progression, use the gears upto 4000. On a car making standard power, there is no real point going past 4000 as you won't find anything there! You just end up making more noise; better to select the next gear up and dropping back onto the torque, as said previously.

Steve

If you change gear at 1900rpm, you'll then be at around 1500rpm or lower in the next gear so then won't be in the middle of the torque band.

Thanks for the explanation. :)

As I've said elsewhere, I'm new to driving :o

Yeah, just a bit!

Have you tried releasing and engaging another gear and only dropping 400rpm of engine speed?

You'll also do your clutch and DMF (dual-mass flywheel) no favours either :)

Well I wasn't sure exactly from memory what rpm you would be in the next gear but I knew it would be at the most 1500rpm if not lower and that it was definitely not in the torque band:D
