vRS Diesel PD - agricultural?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Well took a 57 plate vRS for a test drive yesterday, overall very impressed. Though I was surprised how agricultural the engine sounded at idle - yes, I know it's a diesel, and it was a bit chilly that morning, but I don't recall the Golf GT TDi140 I had a couple of years back being that rattly - is it just a trait of that engine, would a CR one be better?

Car was on the (main) dealers forecourt at £13k, 21k miles, on variable servicing last service in Apr, first registered in Nov 07 - demo + 1 private owner, looked well cared for, though a scrape on the rear wheel arch that would need them to address, plus needed a couple of new front tyres - so given I get them to do all that would you think would be a fair opening gambit?

Mine is really quite now, just look for cage mod and other fuelling advices on the forum.

It is not as silent as wife's petrol Honda Jazz which idles in dead silent, but a friend of mine was stuck by how silent it was given it's a derv anyway!

£10k. I bought my 57 plate vrs PD for £12k with 5,000 miles on the clock., back in February....so this is worth £11k max.

The CR is definitely quieter all round but packs less of a 'punch' than the PD. You have to rev it to make it go, a trait I'm still getting used to after having 300ft/lb on tap before. :(

Remap here we come.

Having owned a PD and now a CR the PD is noisier but not that bad ... you should hear my colleagues new Fabia Greenline!!!!!!!!

The CR does not pack less of a punch - it just delivers its power in a more linear fashion. The PD is very much an "old skool" type diesel with old skool power delivery - ie: noting, noting, nothing WOAH!!!.........rev limiter

The CR has a much more even spread of power which can appear to be less powerful but in actual fact is quicker point to point due to the increased flexibility.

Agree a remap is on the cards though!!!

My understanding is that second hand car prices have rocketed over the last six months, hence I don't think a comparison to last February is currently realistic.

I'm sure the peak figures are the same, but it's where peak torque comes in revs wise that I'm still getting used to. I'm so used to a diesel having all its wallop in the low to mid range and sometimes it feels like the CR doesn't respond much when I boot it without dropping a cog aswell, then it goes ok if I do.

In short it behaves much more like a turbo petrol to me which is the first turbo diesel I've driven to feel as such. The rest were all nothing...nothing....BOOM....nothing.

Even after the custom remap, the Fabia still drove like that.

I know what you mean it feels wierd holding on to the gears not changing at 3000 rpm. It`s nothing like my old mk1 tdi130 octavia.

Does anyone have any RR graphs to compare a standard PD to a CR? I'd love to see the torque and BHP curves.

Superchips have some before and after curves for a Golf 1.9 TDI PD 105 here:

Not sure if these curves are representative but might give a general idea for the PD. I've not seen any for the CR.

About 6 weeks ago I paid 13.5K for a July 08 Vrs estate PD with 5000 miles on the clock (ex Skoda Hq car) from main dealer. May be a few around still !

£14.995 for a new pre FL VRS CR. Thoguht that was pretty good considering what else was around at the time. I just couldn't stretch to an FL....

The CR >is< a bit odd in its power delivery if you are used to the PD but conming from the Punto it wasn't that much of a jump as Fiat invented the common rail approach so I was used to the spread of torque and the increased rev range.

I've said it before - I'd have no problem owning a PD - lovely engione but I do like the CR better.

The PD engine is smooth enough, but is a bit noisy at idle and in the lower gears. Once up to speed you don't really notice it is a diesel.

However, the CR engine is much more refined/quieter at all times, such that when on a test drive in a CR vRS my SWMBO even commented on it!

I like the punch of the PD but preferred the overall drivability of the CR, and this was one of the big factors in me deciding to buy a new FL CR vRS (I also prefer the looks of the FL).

I've thought for a long time that the PD is verging on unacceptable in terms of NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), and the CR whilst a marked improvement, is still lacking in smoothness and refinement.

Not being a Mazda 3 fan boy or anything here, but the new Mazda developped 2.2D I've got in my 3 is leagues ahead in this area, it really makes the CR and PD units look laughably unrefined. I do think the Octy is also lacking in sound deadening and supression, perhaps the engine mountings need improving also, would certainly help.

...this thing of engine mounts is intriguing. Perhaps is Audi using better ones? What will be part numbers?

Ah, Tom, kudos for your new Mazda. I discovered your thread only today and find "her" quite sexy (hope you're not too jelaous ;) )
