Considering a vRS diesel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm new to these parts :)

I'm currently looking to trade in my Ibiza FR TDi for something bigger, 5 doors, but also want to keep the same sort of level of performance.

So...after discounting the Honda Civic 2.2 CTDI (bit claustrophobic) and Golfs (expensive), I'm currently down to Honda Accord 2.2 CTDI and now the Octavia vRS TDI.

Always liked something about the Octavia vRS. It's obviously quite a change in size from the Ibiza, so would be interested to know what car you had before switching to the Octavia vRS and what made you choose it over alternatives?

I'd be looking for ~07 plate which I believe is the PD engine, not the CR? Any major difference?

Thanks in advance

Welcome. Had a run of Vx Astras before moving over to VAG. The level of kit and price swayed me and I was going from a miserably slow 1.6 Astra to a 1.8 T Octavia. I've now got a CR vRS having had a PD Elegance before hand. No doubt others will have plenty say but the main thing I noticed is how much quieter the CR is over the PD. Nothing wrong with the PD mind you, but the power delivery from the CR is much smoother. There are other threads on this topic if you do a search. I'd hvae another CR over a PD any day.

When did the CR's come in - this year? I think that'd be over what I'm looking to spend. Though I've no complaints with my current PD engine (though I've never had a CR!).

Went from Punto Multijet HGT to Octy VRS CR. Octy not as quick and doesn't quite handle as well but then again it's a heavier car and the build quality is eons better. BIG difference between PD and CR - PD less refined - noisier and more traditional "peaky" VW group diesel power delivery. CR quieter - a mate of mine thought it was a TFSI the first time he got in it!! Power delivery much more linear than the PD - more even spread. That said I would not have been unhappy to get a PD by any means and it really is a cracking engine.

The car was chosen because of the huge VFM comapred to pretty much anything else on the market. I had £15K to spend and it was a 40K BMW 5 series or a crappy Ford. The Honda is a good car but a bit.......insipid to be honest. Buy the Octy - look around, take your time and drive a few. Don't worry about colour - blue, red, black or silver - makes no odds they all look well. Peronally I like the black - very stealthy and very much a Q-Car. Does not attract unwar=nted attention fromthe boys in b lue and people tend to be nice to you on the road. Ground covering potential is huge and no big issues mechanically either.

Get a decent low mileage example, fit a Columbus stereo and off you go!

Do it, you know it makes sense. Oh and you can be smug in the knowledge you are actually driving a Mk5 Golf GT TDI ;)

57's I think

@wardth - I was surprised I liked the Accord tbh, but seriously comfortable/high spec. Would be happy staying with VAG though! And the Octavia vRS is excellent VFM - yet to sit in one though.

@Paul007 - sounds promising then, I'll have a look for some 57's

I got a vRS diesel , 09 so the newer CR management system . Previous to this I had a Citroen C4 VTS (2.0 HDi 136 BHP) and I went for the Skoda vRS over another C4 mainly due to practicality (and a bit more power).

My brother has a Golf GT which must be a good 2 yrs old (PD engine I guess) and my engine is certainly smoother. I cannot comment on the relative power deliveries, as I have only been in his a few times and his DSG box seems to compensate pretty well. I was pushed to diesel by the taxman (company motor), but in this car I really don’t feel to short-changed. The on/off turbo diesel thing isn’t too bad and it does rev out very well. I much prefer the engine to the Citroen unit. - it’s a great A-road / motorway car with loads of solid torque and my drive to work returns the high 40’s in mpg.

I find the all-black interior a bit dreary – I went for a sunroof and I’m glad I did. Although it’s not a common choice in a car with A/C it does break up the black rooflining and adds light to the interior.

The Octavia is clearly a bigger car, but I haven’t found that to be much of a problem, as it still isn’t so big that it gets difficult to park. The extra length does make itself felt when parking on side roads, but the payback is a simply huge load area. The ride is firm, but it doesn’t crash around as bad as the Citroen did; the handling is OK and it does grip very well when you throw it around.

On the practical side, it seems really well put together and provides practical wheels with a decent turn of speed. (Just remember to set the speed warning!)
