Seized brake piston?? and fused wheel??

Featured Replies

Hi ladies and gents,

Wondering if anybody would be able to help me....

My Octavia developed a squeak from the rear a little while back, and at the weekend I had a closer inspection. My findings were as follows;

1) Handbrake appears to be fine; the cable is pulling the arm back and forth as it should.

2) The discs are fairly worn, maybe 1/2 mm to 1mm of wear on the outside of the disc.

3) When jacked up one wheel spins freely, although you can hear it rubbing on the pads a little, but makes no impact on the ‘free spinning’ of the wheel. The other wheel however does not spin freely by hand.

4) The other problem being that I cannot get the wheel off, it’s fused to the mounting plate. I assume due to the steel/aluminium reacting.

Has anyone had a similar problem with the brakes? I’m wondering if the calliper has seized.... Is there an easy way of checking for this?

And as for the wheel, anybody had a similar experience. I had the problem once with another car, and to solve I lowered the car down on the jack with the wheel bolts removed and that did the trick, but no joy with that this time.

Thanks you in advance for your help,

Mark

I had diffliculty removing the wheel from my Mother-in-Law's Polo. The solution in my case was to slacken the wheel bolts by a turn or so and drive the car up and down our road weaving from side to side. This broke free the corrosion and I was able to remove the wheel. Then I gave the wheel and hub a good clean up with a wire brush and some abrasive paper and put them back together with plenty of copper grease to prevent the same happening again.

As for the calliper, it could be seized, or it could just be that the pads are seized in the carrier. You can't really tell until you get the wheel and calliper off.

Plenty of plus gas to uncease. Brake caliper seal kits are avialable for around 13quid per axle.

Ah right ok, are the seal kits easy enough to change? or a bit if a hassle?

Hopefully the wheel will come off this time with one of these methods....:scared:

Cheers for the help :)
