how difficult is it to remove the sump and inspect the oil pump?

Easy. 20 bolts or so for the sump, another 5 for the pickup pipe. Having drained the oil first, of course.

It is very easy as already said.

You will need a new sump gasket though of course. Maybe plan to do some other repair jobs like the timing chain while you have the sump off?
