cambelt

Featured Replies

my furby vrs is due a cambelt soon, Is there anyone in near Croydon, Surrey that can do it.

The local skoda dealship want £270 to do it.

Pm if you can please :)

I'm no help in terms of location but that doesn't sound that bad, infact it seems very good. Many quote £400+

Remember to get the water pump done too, £35 part and they shouldn't charge much longer for labour.

My only other suggestion would be find an independant garage with good feedback and supply them your own parts from a couple of VAG sites frequently mentioned on here. But still. that would be around £120 for parts delivered plus 3 hours labour (typically) which would be at least £120 + VAT. I may be wrong, but its so hard to find a garage charging under £40/hour labour these days.

I spend a lot of money on my car ensuring everything works and it runs well but I try to minimise how much of the work the garage does thus reducing the labour cost. The problem with the timing belt change is that if you get it wrong, you could cause a lot of costly damage so it really is a case of taking the car to a mechanic if you have no other option.

Mine needs doing after christmas and I just rang Hobin in Manchester, they quoted me £293 all in, plus an extra £35 (or thereabouts) for the fuel pump. Whilst I could probably do this myself, it would take me ages and I'd be cacking myself about getting it wrong. So £270 from a main dealer seems cheap to me. I've been quoted more than that by an independent near here.

Btw as an aside Hobin quoted another £170 all in to replace the front discs and pads with new OEM setup which I could easily do myself, but at that price I'll be leaving it with them to do on my way to work.

£270 sounds a good price!

Independant garage by me Two Locks Garage, (Newport S Wales) charged me £185 all in for the cambelt change. Foolishly i ignored the advice about the water pump. But even so i thought £185 was a bargain.
