Turbo Faults - will it go again

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Been looking at a 2005 vRS Fabia with 60ish miles on the clock. It has full main dealer history, and two owners. Earlier this year it had the turbo replaced just after its cambelt was done (2 months after). The bill came to £1300 from the dealer and have the paperwork.

Should i be concerned that it may fail again, as a read there were some problems with later cars (not using the Garrett turbo).

Sorry if this is a complete newbie question.

Thanks

Matt

Firstly hello,

None of the Fabia vRs had a Garrett turbo as far as I know, mine is a 2004 (54) and its a KKK. My turbo went at 60k but I have a new one which is going strong now the car has 90k on it.

The bill will be huge from the dealers but you can get them cheaper and fitted by an independant alot cheaper, thats what I did, it came to about £750.

When you say problems, do you mean turbo failures? It's only because they use KKK there will be more documented 'failures', yes the Garrett is a stronger turbo but nothing to worry about really.

To be honest, the turbo can fail at any time, just treat it carefully. new turbo on it and 60k aint no miles for a Diesel. as I say, mine has 90k and it's a s good as the day I got it.

Enjoy it and dont' worry too much mate.

Ben

the kkk isn't a weak turbo,i ran mine over the design limits for 10k with no problems at all, trackdays the lot,as long as it is run up to temperature gentle and allowed to cool after a hard run it will be fine

No, not at all. The old one obviously had a major fault but as this one is new, it should be fine!

Does anyone know where the Garrett myth came from? AIUI, the Garrett ones were all PD150s... Then there's the question of why people seem to trust the Americans to engineer a turbo better than the Germans...???

There are two types of Garrett, the VA version was fitted to a handful of Fabia's and all Golf/Bora's. The PD150 turbo is actually a VB version which has the stronger internals. Ive done a fair amount of research on this recently unfortunately!! Honeywell-Garret make aircraft parts, thats a good enough excuse for me to get one, rather than a 'German' product haha.

And Porsche (who could spec whoever they choose, frankly) use KKK as their turbo supplier for both their road and competition cars - that's good enough for me... ;) I wouldn't read too much into what Honeywell-Garrett do outside the civil automotive arena: a mil-spec turbo would be expected to last in the region of 100,000 hours (say a couple of million miles) and would be built to that standard irrespective of cost...
