Where to drive?

Featured Replies

I keep getting stymied trying to find some road to checkout how the O2 performs in all gears. Last weekend a local stretch of motorway was limited to 50mph all of the part I used. Today I was stuck behind 'Sunday drivers' persisting at 40mph or less in 50 mph zones, or learners at whatever speeds they could find on the clock, irrespective of traffic.

I did manage to find some long straight sections of ex-Roman road, but they're soon gobbled up a 60mph-ish, and they're a bit hairy on return in the dark when they suddenly deteriorate into tight bends.

On the plus side I did find a bit of local uphill dual carriageway which has speed cameras. In my previous car, after the last camera it just about maintained the 50 mph speed limit, but the 1.4TSI in 6th gear was still able to accelerate. I'll just have to keep an eye on my fuel consumption!

Are you new vRS owners booking track days.?

Go to Wales!

I was there yesterday. Beautiful scenery, great twisty roads which are also very smooth and surfaced with proper tarmac (not that horrible noisy compressed stone chip stuff)!

Be careful with your speed though because the cops are pretty hot round there.

...and you can call in for a nice cup of tea and a Welsh cake once you get here :P

There are alot of roads in Wales where you could easily do twice the NSL. The skill of a good drive in Wales is finding a tour that avoids these honey pot roads and is actually going to be dam hard to do more than 60 on most of it ;)

Same goes for the Peak too, well anywhere except maybe the Highlands where it's too pretty to rush on by.

Yes, I still had fun despite not really speeding :)

Last time I was in Wales the roads struck me as similar to the Peak District, which was like a Curate's Egg, good in parts. I used to use the A6 a lot but then found the A515 was much better (heading for Youlgreave).

The traffic cops are a downside to all this. I know they're doing their job in keeping death off the roads, and I wouldn't want their job of scraping up the remains, but................

On the plus side for the Peak District, the bends are more open. W Yorks probably has the worst road layouts in the country. I'm surprised the death rate isn't higher.

West Yorks, not far from the M62. I know there are some nice driving roads round here, but I seem to be hexed when I reach them, that there's something in front travelling slower than the allowable speed.

I'd better not say where my current 'best bet' is but it's a nice dual carriageway which wends its way through a valley. I've never been on it when the traffic isn't flowing well. There are occasionally some snarl-ups exiting at each end, or routes off, but otherwise it's a pleasure to drive, especially now with this 1.4TSI!

Stymied again! Went on this road today en-route to a local dealer and the inside lane was coned off the whole way to clean the drains and cut some shrubbery. A lorry ahead was keeping everything to 40mph, so didn't even reach the 50mph limit at any part. Ho hum!

If you're in West Yorks, I'd head up to the North York Moors myself. Many a good driving road is round there, in fact quite a few are used for magazine tests (Evo, Performance Car and the like). I've got an article which lists some, so I'll pick out a few highlights and post them up.

I've also found some good routes in North Lincolnshire; either head off the 62 onto the M180 and head for Scunny and then down. Or across the Humber Bridge and go searching off the main routes

You need to head off from your traditional routes I think, the ones you're used to travelling on :)

I'm sure the further away I go, probably north, the more open roadway I'll find, *but* I want to try repeats on the same sections of roads, so don't want to be expending too much time and money getting to and from there. There's no guarantee even if I find more remote open road it won't be blocked again next time by slow traffic or roadworks, so I'll have more of a hunt locally first. At least I'll save time and money in the short term.

It's a bit of a Catch-22 I admit, but good luck nonetheless. It's always fun and exciting finding new routes, and yes - often these are right on your doorstep. I found this out myself on Sunday morning, finding some new variations I'd never even thought of before :D
