Have I dumbed down my ECU?!

This may seem like a silly question but is there a particular duration of driving style that the ECU adapts to?

I drive pretty conservatively most of the time, aiming for good economy, with just a few tickles of the throttle here and there. But today I thought I'd remind myself what the car is made of and tried to link together a few dual carriage roundabouts (hard accelaration up to the speed limit) - yeah the car was pretty quick with the usual bug torque shove but I dunno, it just felt a bit out of breath, lots of lag and a bit unresponsive. Either I've become numb to the power of the car or my 80% tame driving style has dumbed down the ECU.

How much spirited driving would it take to sharpen it back up?! Or is it remap time to satisfy the one year of vrs ownership itch :thumbup:

It's about 100 miles to adapt, are you sure you have no other problems? MAF perhaps?

driving like a granny clogs up the ports etc. you need to give it a good blast every now and again

MAF problems can manifest themselves in many ways but usually sluggishness. The ECU relies on the MAF sensor reading to know how much air is being taken in, and therefore how much fuel it can use to go with it. If it is incorrectly reading the amount of air being taken in, it can under or over fuel depending on what the readings actually are. Usually it under-reads and you end up driving around with less power than Skoda intended :thumbup:

So is there a test for MAF sensor issues? There's nothing obviously wrong I don't think, I just seem to remember the car being a bit pokier when I first got it. Would be interested to see if it is just me or not?

You could unplug the MAF and take it for a drive, if it's totally screwed then it should drive better with it unplugged. However if it's just a case of deterioration over time then unfortunately it's difficult today without fitting a new one.

I'm like you.. no real rush most of the time.. I agree with Tom that you have to give it a few beans at least every other day or so to keep it lively.. otherwise it gets sluggish.

Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes, this clears any learnt settings and puts it back to factory default, if it's still a bit sluggish then go out for a national speed limit drive in 3rd & 4th ;)

If your still finding it sluggish then it could be something more serious, or like you say, you've got used to it.. mine had started to feel slow, but 3 weeks in a 1.8 Insignia showed me what a truly "average" car feels like.. the vRS blew it away when I got it back.

Check your inter cooler pipes, they're weak and a split or loose connection will cause a dip in performance.
