Difficult to tell just looking at one letter.

I can only assume it's got something to do with the line down the middle of the letter - is it reflective by any chance ?

I'm sure if you do a search on t'interweb you'll be able to find the regulations for what is and isn't legal

Is the plate stamped with the BS number?

on the back of it yes

There has to be a BS number on the front. And the letters should be all black with no reflective bit. As for the guy who flogged you it, he doesn't care. He can say it's legal till the cows come home, but he has your money and will say that so he keeps it. And he won't be paying the fine either. Change it back to normal, it's only a number plate for god's sake!

Depends how this is interpreted

Further requirements for registration plates

11.—(1) No reflex-reflecting material may be applied to any part of a registration plate and

the plate must not be treated in such a way that the characters of the registration mark become,

or are caused to act as, retroreflective characters.

(2) A registration plate must not be treated in any other way which renders the characters

of the registration mark less easily distinguishable to the eye or which would prevent or impair

the making of a true photographic image of the plate through the medium of camera and film

or any other device.

(3) A registration plate must not be fixed to a vehicle—

(a) by means of a screw, bolt or other fixing device of any type or colour,

(B) by the placing of a screw, bolt or other fixing device in any position, or

© in any other manner,

which has the effect of changing the appearance or legibility of any of the characters of the

registration mark, which renders the characters of the registration mark less easily

distinguishable to the eye or which prevents or impairs the making of a true photographic image

of the plate through the medium of camera and film or any other device.

(4) Section 59(2)(a) of the Act (regulations the contravention of which attracts a level 3 fine)

applies to paragraphs (1), (2) and (3) of this regulation.

if you have the BS AU 145 D mark (Ususally on the front for ease of conformance checking) then whoever made them shoud either confirm to you they are legal or supply you with some gratis ones if you actually asked for standard legal plates.

thanks for the help, checked on the site i bough it off and a few others, the hi-line font i have is legal

Further to the above post the MOT requirements are:

3. On vehicles first registered on or after 1 September 2001, check that the registration plates

a. display the name and postcode of the supplying outlet

b. display a BSAU145d marking

c. do not display a honeycomb or similar effect background

4. Refer to pages 4 - 6 and check visually that the characters are correctly formed, spaced, and are not obviously likely to be misread due to, for example, badly positioned or uncovered retaining bolts etc.

If yours are marked with the standard on the back of the plate the MOT tester is within his rights to fail you for it, and if its an MOT fail its generalised as not in roadworthy condition so the coppers opinion may well be correct.

Also needs to display the manufacturer of the plate, and the postcode.

Take it to your local MOT station and the answer will be revealed
