HID headlights

Featured Replies

Hello.

Is there online available kits to retrofit headlight height auto adjust system and washers? Thanks.

Maris

No. There's not a complete retrofit kit available. You could order all the parts, but it would be a massive job and require alternation or even new wiring looms. It would also work out very expensively!

Steve

You can get after market ones that are illegal and can dazzle everyone while making you look a complete retard in the process though. Don't go that route though, for everyone else's sake at least!

Really don't see the need for that comment.

Get some 6k HID's from HIDs 4 U there about £100 and they don't dazzle people, or even make you look like a retard

in fact.. as long as you have your manual height adjuster on 2 then any HID should be fine. i had them in my polo for 2 years, no flashing or dazzling other drivers

Well they are illegal technically.

It could just be I have had bad experiences but the amount of them around here shinning at the sky more than the road is pretty annoying. Even worse when the roads are as rutted as they are and they bounce everywhere.

If you have to drive around with the height adjuster on 2, then there isn't much point in fitting them really. Might as well just spend £20 quid on a set of bulbs and save a lot of hassle. One of the guys on the Octy 1 forum has just been stopped by the Police and told to remove his HID kit as it is not legal.

The amount of glare produced by retrofit kits is what causes the problem as the HID burner does not create the light in the same position as the filament bulb.

i know what you mean, but buying a proper kit and not a chesap one of ebay and fitting it to a non chav car is alright. i know there not legal but worth it. this was my beam pattern in my polo.. not bad to say i had no projector headlights.

:)

Not bad? Have you seen the amount of scatter on that light output? And the amount of bleed on the shot by your front door? Have those been through an MoT?

Steve

I was on my way home the other night followed by an old ****ty rover that quite obviously had HID's fitted and I had to pull over to let it past they were blinding me that much !

Not exactly road safe

Really don't see the need for that comment.

Erm they do I'm affraid, even behind projector lamps, the 5k (closer to the 4.3k colour used in OEM bulbs) were causing other road users problems.

The polo doesn't have projectors and I bet you have annoyed at least a few other drivers. More likely people can't be bothered these days.

Also 6k bulbs don't put out a particularly high amount of light at a distance and their colour makes them next to useless in reasonably thick fog.

Sorry, but those Polo lights are bloody awful.

You also stand the chance of being left without insurance should you have a crash. I posted a comment from Adrian Flux about HID's in a previous thread. If you did have an accident you could lad yourself with a huge bill. I wish they did however have some sort of legal aftermarket system as the light output from the polo with them is amazing.

Was there a post on the forum, as cant find any posts relating to this.

If the aftermarket fitting of an HID kit was shown to have a contributory factor to the incident, then yes - I could expect you'd have the book thrown at you. And rightly so to be honest. Some would say they're not legal for a reason...

Steve

Been there done it... fitted two seperate kits to my Fabia VRS one with those special supposed "anti glare" H7R Bulbs

Utter waste of time scatters light everywhere and output is no better really than some uprated Phillips Xtremes.

Dont believe this crap about "expensive" kits from whoever - its all the same crap knocked up in a Hong Kong back street.

i know what you all saying, and its true they're illegal for a reason. but a bmw x5 overtook me on the motorway with his standard hid lights and they was brighter than any full beam i've seen. how come they're legal?

just my 2p.. but i thought my hids i put in were the best mod i did to the car, both for seeing at night and looks.

From what i understand they are strictly not legal in the UK (under uk law anyway). The fact that makers such as BMW etc get away with it is because they are legal under EU law and most EU law supersedes UK law.

Hello Maris and as it's your first post, Welcome to the forum.

If you want better headlights, then buy the high % bulbs e.g. Osram NightBreakers or Phillips Xtremes. If you want the white/blue Xenon look then by coloured coated bulbs (Blue Vision, etc) I have uprated bulbs on mine and they DO make a difference. :D

Here is the legal regs about retro-fitting HID Xenon bulbs: DOT - Aftermarket HID (Xenon) headlamps This video explains it very well: YouTube - Illegal HID Conversion Kits Explained

Proper/OEM ones are fine, as by UK law they need to have self levelers built in (rather than a wheel), and high pressure washers to clean them. As long as these are there, then by law, I think they are legal.

Just get aftermarket HIDS.

There is no such thing as "technically illegal". They are illegal. Period.

The only technicality is if you get caught or not.

As with all potentially insurance voiding mods, if you run someone down and the court awards then half a million and your insurance is void, you are personally liable and therefore ruined.

This has happened

Trust me I fit a set of HID4u 5k ultimates behind the projectors of an octy II and they were still blinding other road users. They had washers and passed the light check test at 2 MOT stations on the same day, however they are just too bright for country roads where the road surface isn't even and you don't have self levelling. They went back and a pair of osram silverstars went in the housing instead.

It's not worth causing a crash over IMHO.

Xenon headlights are only legal in the UK through type approval. As such is a vehicle is approved for EU use it can be used here.

That can only apply to headlights fitted from the factory and not something you put in the car aftermarket.

People keep talking about how blinding they are when not aligned correctly, yet a big ******ing range rover or X5 behind you with "legal" projector headlights that beam right on to your rear view mirror is perfectly alright?

Somehow that does not make sense.
