I can't drive :( Help!!!!!!

Featured Replies

Ok here is the story

was driving down the A167 today and noticed a new shape micra passing me and decided being a young male driver in a fast skoda that this wasn't right and put me foot down, I started at about 40 MPH in 3rd and changed up at around 3500 - 4000 but didn't start to pull away at all until I reached around 80 ish in 5th

Had to hold back before doing silly speeds in the wet but the guy in the micra was keeping up all the way,

When he passed I noticed it was an SX model so when I got home I checked, the maximum engine in these is a 1.4 (80 ish BHP) engine.

How on earth was he keeping up, I would have though that since we were moving when I put my foot down being a deisel I should have left him but didn't.

Really annoyed now as obviously it was me and not the car. Does anyone have any suggestions other than a remap I can't afford??

Buy a fast car ;)

Or don't pick on little Micras

Micra Kerb Weight 1026 kg

Fabia vRS Kerb Weight 1315 kg

= Fabia is lardy...

I know but fabia has about 50 Bhp on a micra and thats before its fully run in

This is my first diesel so maybe I'm still driving like a petrol head

Still gave you a run didn't it ;)

Maybe you aren't running at full steam..

The power band on diesels is very narrow, unlike many petrol powered cars which just keep on revving... If you are new to diesels you need to get used to the different driving technique, you have a slight advantage with the Fabia vrs and the nice gear ratios in the 6 speed box, so you can keep the engine working within the power band, whilst making good forward progress :)

I find the engine in the Fabia vrs works really well between 2000 - 3500 rpm outside this its OK for cruising.

so I was possibly going to far in each gear... will have to practice some more :)

Micras can be quite nippy. My old P reg 1.3 micra used to keep up with my brothers 2.0 vectra sri to about 80, and one of the lads from work once raced me home in his saxo vtr...again, we were pushing 80-85 before he got past. Depends on how you drive the car. Used to rev the poor little thing out in every gear...only way to make it go :)

Practice is certainly needed when changing from petrol to diesel powered vehicles. The torque offered by diesel engines is good, but as I said before the power band of diesels takes some getting used to.

Remember that anyone can go fast on the straight bits, the bendy bits are always far more interesting :)

Agree with the others about you needing practice. When you were in front the other day, I felt you were going a bit slow ;) I just think you need to practice a bit more, but also the fact the car is not run in is not going to help.

Also, I used to own a 1.4 Nissan Micra Sport (old shape one) and it was a lot nippier than you would give it credit for. For a start it would hit 90 mph in 3rd. I reckon if I was to give my Sport+ a race, I wouldnt be doing all that much until it changed from 2nd to 3rd (at just over 60), and believe me when I say that car would almost keep up with anything up to 60 mph.

Anyway, I had a play with a Ford Puma yesterday and there really was nothing in it, but having driven a Puma I know they are definitely quicker than a Micra. What you need to do, is thrash it, everywhere. At least once its warmed up. They take forever to run-in otherwise.

Whereabouts on the 167 were you BTW?

A 1.4 Micra will do 0-60 in 10 seconds, FYI.

Micra's are ace...when i passed my test i used to drive my dad's 1.3 16v Micra and it was fantastic, 60mph in 2nd was great fun! Needless to say i broke it :( Ahhh well you live and you learn! :D

:rofl::thumbup:

I treat mine like crap, redlining in every gear, every day, not even letting it warm up before I went mental on it, and it did start feeling a bit sorry for itself after 35,000 miles :D

Try 'squeezing' the gas to the floor rather than 'booting' it all the way to the deck in one fell swoop. This appears to give better response in the vRS IMHO as it stays in the narrow power band then...

I was heading back to chester-le-street from the arnison centre and had just come off the round about onto the A167, saw him coming up behind me and waited a bit till he caught up then tried to get away.

As said earlier this is the fastest car I have had before that it was a 1.4 corolla also I was just booting it to the floor rather than pushing gently, it is also not fully run in yet at only 3200 miles on the clock

Did this to a couple of 1.0-16v Micras. Both went on to 100k problem free before we sold them! Oh, and also returned 50mpg which was pretty impressive :D Not quite as relaxed to drive as the Fabia though ;)

Well thats the first problem. The other guy sounds like he was already accelerating when you started to accelerate. Naturally in those circumstances, your car is then having to play catch up so it will take a couple of seconds before you start gaining.

Edited to say, if it is where I think it was, you were probably also accelerating up a slight incline?

Yep, try a much slower, more progressive action on the throttle, and use the throttle to keep the car on the boil, and you'll get better results.

I assume you know how bloody annoying that is for the car behind? Usually the trick of an ego driving a BM or a merc.

It never caused any problems up to that point, but I cant put my finger on it, but it didnt seem as good towards the end. Rumour has it the 1.4 engine was just not as refined as the 1.3 engine. I surprised a few people at the lights, as its so easy to drive quick, but they did need a real thrashing to go fast. 5th to 3rd gearchanges were quite common on motorways :D

Its a different story with 180+bhp :D

There's a turbo kit available for the Micra, as well. I think it's

Hobnob I have highlighted the word in your post that explains fully why you could barely pass a basic Micra.

I know, think he must have had a turbo or something, nothing to do with bad driving and a car that not run in yet :P

I was driving through chester-le-street on the 24th, maybe it was me, a black vrs 54 plate?, only had about 200 miles on the clock so I wasn't playing.
