DPF re-gen

Featured Replies

I've been reading quite alot on here about DPF re-gen and there seems to be quite a few people saying that they can tell when it is happening. Just out of curiosity, how can you tell?

Idle speed sits at 1k rather than the usual 750 for a few mins whilst its happening, like the throttle is a bit stuck. That's about it as far as I can tell. Others I think have commented on a reduction in power too and increased engine roughness but I've not noticed these.

Engine sounding different. Idle goes up as does the instant fuel consumption. Engine can hesitate a bit on acceleration. Oil temp and water temp goes up from 90° to 100° (if you have gauges for that, the std temp gauge wont move).

Cheers guys.

Hiya Fitz, yeah i've posted on here about DPF regen before. I've got an Octy 2 vrs tdi pd and you can easily notice when DPF regen takes place;

1. Exhaust note becomes 'deeper'.

2. Engine has slightly more of a 'roar'.

3. Slight Increase or decrease in engine power.

4. Car 'surges' occasionally when you accelerate.

These happen on mine but i don't worry about it, i drive mostly motorway and twisty country roads to work. You get used to it and the car reverts back to normal. I believe that if you only do school runs or potter round town in a DPF-equipped vehicle then it can be a big problem eventually.

I've just got home, noticed the car idling at 1000k, started thinking what was wrong with it, sounds like its perfectly normal then as was doing just as you described

It's a bit odd till you realise what's going on. I thought there was something wrong too when mine did it but a few searches on here described the same symptoms and I was relieved to hear that's what it's meant to do.

Do you have a TDI? Your details say TFSI.

I obviously haven't noticed anything like what has been described above. I have had the car a year now so i'm guessing it must have happened at some point. :)

If you happen to drive on highway a lot (like myself, incidentally) you might not notice the regen as done while driving at speed. Infact it's easy to detect the regen while queueing up...

I'd add to that the sensation that the engine is mis-firing.

Yep fair comment rsbspt, i suppose the engine does appear to misfire but i couldn't confirm whether or not it actually does.

Thanks for all the info guys, and now that rsbspt mentioned that it feels like it is miss-firing, I have felt this under hard acceleration at times. Although not very often.

I do nearly all highway driving in my VW TDI (using cruise control most of the time), and so far I've never noticed doing a regen. Its done 53,000Km so I assume it has done a few regens by now (and yes, I believe it has a working DPF - it doesn't blow any visible black smoke when I take off hard).

Does my car have a DPF? I thought not from the brochure. Is it only the VRS that has them?

No the old 140PD diesel in the FL Elegance doesn't have a DPF (not according to the SUK literature, anyway).

How often does it do it? Mine seems to re-gen once a week (sometimes 10 days)

It will regen based on the % soot in the filter, as measured by a sensor, so it will vary depending on driving style. :)

Almost daily, in my case, LOL

Really? That does sound quite frequent!

320Km/day most on highway and heavy foot concur to result (actually 92500 Km in 1,5 years...)

A regen every 200 miles still sounds a bit frequent to me.

I've only noticed my Mazda regen once, at about 600 miles.

It is too frequent IMO , unless it's having the **** ragged off it all the time.

Fiat quote 800-1000km as a normal interval for example , though mine is currently at the dealers having work done to stop it happening a bit more frequently than that.

Incidentally a local garage just told me the same, but my driving style likes high revs even on my diesel and I guess this builds residues in the DPF.

On the other side the engine feels prompter and quicker by being kept at high revs. I guess it's pretty clean inside, despite clogging the DPF :)

The flip side is that if you drive the car hard enough the DPF will get hot enough to regenerate on it's own - passive regeneration.

When it doesn't get that hot the ECU changes various parameters to increase temperatures in the DPF up to a suitable level which is the active regeneration that people can sometimes spot.

Yep to me it definately feels lumpy to drive, just like mentioned above, mis firing almost, makes it feel clumsy to drive in 30 mph zones.
