Driving Abroad with Xenons

Featured Replies

This is something I've been wondering about as I'm driving to Le Mans next June - with ordinary headlights you buy those stick-on adapters that stop your lights blinding the French drivers :D

What do you do with Xenons? Is it the same? Is there a magic switch somewhere?

Not sure about the Octy, but apparently in the Fabia headlights there is a lever that you can change the beam direction with.

There should be as Graeme quite rightly said a lever in the back of the headlight which alters the beam pattern so you can use them on the continent.

However getting to the lever is a different matter alltogether.

On our Octy (2 year old L&K) its a dealer adjust thing & I believe it takes over an hour as they have to de-gas the lights, same again when you get home.

weve been to France several times in the car & never bothered & never had a problem.

Weve taken the 4x4 tp France a couple of times with un adapted lights & Im running Rally Bulbs "naughty", we get flashed occasionaly but no problems from the authorities.

If youve been to france a lot you will know how many French cars have horrendously badly set lights & they seem to get away with it.

Aparently the stick on adapters will help, my advice is to fit those & go for it, if you get stopped at least they will know you tried.

There have been quite a few posts which date a bit talking about the subject of xenon lights.

I actually have a pdf of the technical manual which describes Ross' post - flicking the lever over. Although getting to it is the biggest challenge :(

I asked my dealer if they could do it and they said "yeah, no probs". When I asked if I could watch them do it, it was a "No way Jose"! Although adjusting is just a matter of moving a lever, you may want to leave it to your dealer if you're worried about 30,000 volts going through your body  ;)

The only problem with that is I have to drive from Leeds to Portsmouth, then switch them. I suppose I could find a local Skoda dealer to do it as long as I get there before 5pm.

As I was the originator of the first post on this subject, I'll stick my oar in here.

When I took the L&K abroad, I just stuck some bits of tape in roughly the right place on the lights. Without dismantling the front of the car, you can't get to the magic levers, and, once adjusted, the dip pattern is "straight", rather than "dipped to the left".

I never got flashed or pulled in about four weeks of driving around. If you can't see where to stick the tape, pull the car in front of a wall or garage door, and just mask off the LHS off the beam.

Contrary to popular belief, Xenons produce less heat than Halogens, so you won't end up with melted PVC all over your lights!

Phil

Tfboy,

Would really appreciate if you could send this to me so I can post it in the FAQ section of the site. Would be good for eveyone else to know as I was going to drive abroad and rooboy was told the same thing about flicking a switch.

PM me and I will send you my mail address so you can send it to me.

Thanks Ivan
