tfsi vrs engine knocking noise... HELP!!

Featured Replies

Help please...

just bought a 06 octavia vrs with 85000 miles with full skoda history, the cars great and runs well but its got an annoying knocking noise coming from the engine somewhere which sounds a bit cammy...

I've just spent 200 quid having the cover removed and cams inspected, they are fine but a possible cause was identified as being a knocking from the piston inside the fuel pump, a small cam type part in there was replaced only cost 20 quid but hasnt solved the problem....

I also had the engine flushed and a 10/40 semi synthetic oil change, recommended to use this and go away from long life service and oil.

The other thing i didnt mention and may be key was the knocking noise isnt there at first when the engine is cold, it only becomes evident at 80 - 90 degrees, obviously 90 being the normal running temp....

Anyone got any ideas please or had similar problem??

Is it a Mk1 or Mk2 ???

I ask as I'll move this thread to a better area

I have moved your thread to where it should get more attention.

TFSI=octy2

Tut, tut should always be run on vag spec 5w30.

Thanks, there is one other symptom that i forgot to mention, the knocking sound gets faster when you rev the car, in time with the engine..

Fixed or variable is fully synth 5w30. I think you get more carbon deposits with 10w40.

I had this problem too - take it to a dealer its to do with something under the cam cover

Did they actually inspect the part of the cam that drives the fuel pump. The earlier cams (revision A) are known to wear badly at this point.

It is a problem that VAG are aware of as they released a revision B camshaft and a technical service bulletin about the problem.

Did you have any fault codes showing when the garage checked your car over?

Hi thanks for your response, i think that is the part they suspected and replaced, it did have signs of wear on it but the new one hasnt cured the problem??

Harry VRS, thanks for your response that sounds encouraging, could i ask do you know exactly what it was or was it expensive??

If you've been running a TFSI on oil that doesn't meet the VW504 spec, then I think you might be in for a big bill.

No worries. It was covered by my warranty so it was free.

As far as I can remember (it was 3 years ago when I had this problem) it was to do with the cambelt catching the cam cover ever so slightly. I was experiencing similar symptoms to what you have explained so this likely sounds to be your problem.

My local dealer had it in for a day and I don't think any parts were needed just a bit of adjustment.

Sorry if this is all a bit vague, but I hope you find some use from it

Could be the DMF. Mine has annoing clacking when idling but you can hear it only sitting inside in a quiet garage.

Sounds like they replaced the cam follower for the high pressure fuel pump. I would be surprised (and disappointed) if they didn't check the cam lobe quite carefully while they had the HPFP out. If the cam lobe was also worn it could make a light (not heavy) knocking noise.

PLease let us know what the solution is (when you find it), as that will add to the corporate knowledge that makes this site so valuable.
