Whats the point of.......

.....One of the fog lights going on when turning ?

Cars today are full of clever features and gadgets, but this is one I can't see the point of.

I like how Audi's new sidelights dimm when an indicator is on, so that you can see the indicator clearer, but I find the single fog light thing quite distracting.

Thoughts ?

It'll be very handy for me when I get my FL L&K Octy. When it's dark I'll be able to see more of the drive when I get home as I turn in (during the winter months)

Does seem a shade pointless imho. Noticed it on the new Leon, and Mercs have had it for ages...

Cornering lights. They light a bit to the sides.

Looks silly though. :thumbdwn: If my car had it, it would immediately turn it off (by VCDS).

Active cornering light is better, special lights that shine into the corner where you want to go.

But only the foglights (although they are made specially for cornering and fog. It is not a usual foglight) looks dumb.

All those (oops) who are knocking it... have you actually driven a car and used the system ?

I have, when cornering lights are only foglights that come on and off, you will hardly see a difference (try turning on the foglights before you turn). It does light out the corner a bit more, but not enough to say WOW.

Active cornering lights are different. They do light a lot in the direction where you want to go.

I've never gone round a corner at night and felt "if only I had more light to the side"

Do you mean "All those"?

So, its a case of a cheap way of getting cornering lights then.

Depending on where the indicator is on the car, sometimes the foglight being on obsures the indicator.

Thanks for the replies, I sort of see the point of them, but don't think I'll be buying a new car to get them.

ooops, typing to quick

Just realised my L&K will have cornering headlights as well, so maybe the test drive emphasised them over the foglight.

I think the first car to have them was a Citroen ds

The Citroen DS had the proper moving headlights as their cornering lights and they are very effective for a car of that age too :)

Citroen DS is a cool car...

Had a BX and that was cool due to the funky bits, the CX was cool in a random way and the DS was so nice to ride in and cool in so many other ways :)

Thought we we're talking about cornering lights/foglights... not Citroens

er... yes...

I hate those foglights! :)

My parents used to have a BX mind...

I wonder about the legality of them anyway. Obviously there's no issue with cornering headlights but fog lights are only for use where visibility is restricted. Still punishable by a £30 fine. Would make an interesting court case and frighten some manufacturers for a while!

I find them quite handy when turning onto my drive - it makes black cats much easier to spot , and yes they are legal.

But what I'm asking is what is it that makes these legal. There's nothing in law that says you can put your fog lights on when visibility is restricted and whilst cornering.

I think it's cos the EU gave them type approval, and therefore our own laws are overiden, and they are allowed. (I think thats how it works.)

Ah the EU!

I'm not against Europe particularly but..... Actually I don't even think I need to start a rant about that. Everyone knows what is likely to be said!!

Indeed it does.

Had them activated on my Octi vRS, (thanks Roo) they are better for cornering in my humbuble oppinion
