I think I've finally decided that a diesel VRs is for me. The Mazda6 sport came close, but it's considerably more expensive to buy, so the Skoda it is.

However, I just don't think I can get past not having a MFSW (it's a personal safety thing- don't like reaching across for radio controls). Therefore, I'm going to have to go for a DSG.

What's the reliability of this gearbox like. I've found lot's of Audi/VW horror stories (though I appreciate that's an internet thing). I'm really looking for some reassurance before I make the final decision.

Can't speak from any personal experience as yet, but I've made the identical decision to you (both ruling out Mazda 6 and ruling in DSG). There are a few threads on this forum with some unpleasant experiences - but none have as yet made me have second thoughts when balanced against all the good comemnts made.

I have a Toledo (variant of Altea) with 140bhp ++ TDi + DSG - coming up to 4yrs old in December and now on 80k miles and absolutely now problems with the DSG.

Had a replacement cylinder head and about to get a 2nd replacement turbo, but DSG box is OK! :)

Also, I think the Octavia is a good choice over the Mazda, which gives virtually no options to add to std spec.

I've order the DSG in diesel form. Yes there are horror storys but as there are with any car out there.

I would suggest driving one as it is a real eye opener its not like any autobox I've driven.

I think it's more of the case that everything is standard on the Mazda :)

Always been a manual fan, so might have to adapt to the DSG. The MFSW is quite an expensive option though (particularly as you seem to have to specify maxidot as well..unless I've been confused by the other thread :confused:)

A 3-spoke MFSW is standard on the DSG-equipped vRS. Maxi-dot is a 125 quid option.

It comes as standard when you order DSG box. It gives you radio controls and paddle shift for gearbox selection

The £480 option gives you a fully integrated mobile phone with aerial and Maxidot

all of which can be operated from the wheel controls.

The car's phone accesses your mobile using Bluetooth and rSAP. This in effect turns your phone off and just uses the coding/mobile number from your SIM card.

If you decide on this option make sure your phone supports rSAP (Remote SIM Access Profile)

Hi I am on my second Octavia 2.0 tdi both with dsg, and have had no problems at all with the gearbox or the engine at all. Just remember tho it doesnt like to pull out at a roundabout if the gap is abit small.

Other than that its the best gearbox

Got a fantastic Maz6 Sport which is a petrol with the 6 speed, getting annoyed with the gear changing all the time. Also, whilst the new m6 is well spec'ed it feels more like a big Ford, even a little dated.

Interested in the BT (which I ordered), does this mean the car actually has a GSM phone in it, that talks to your SIM??? Where is the cellphone antenna mounted for the GSM??

Yes, car has its own phone somewhere. It talks to your SIM via BT

I was going to ask the same Q about where the aerial is

If the car has Columbus satnav the roof aerial is different with small fin in front of the normal aerial. The BT option could be the same and use a fin and whip aerial

Think we need to hear from someone who has the BT option.....and pics!!!!!!! There's no excuses, modern digi cams take good pics in the dark..

Getting back to the DSG, someone on here said, buy the DSG for what it can do, not what can go wrong. Seems good logic to me.

I've done 54k on my DSG diesel Altea and its the best box I've ever driven. I am a big fan , particularly when I'm in traffic. Its fine for elsewhere too!

This is my second and I've no complaints. The other poster who mentioned needing to take care at junctions is about right, but judge your joining point carefully and it's not a problem. They do roll back on a hill just like a manual and the CR is really quiet, much quieter than the PD140 I had before.

I thought the new ones (DSG7) came with hill hold?

There are horror stories, but there's a lot of DSG boxes out there. Mine has been fine so far, and it's brilliant to drive.

The BT system merely controls your phone remotely using the bluetooth function. There is no remote antenna as your phone just uses its own.

(oh and uses really good speakers and a great mic!)

I was rather put off DSG by the comparative lack of urgency in the initial step-off from rest. This matters less with a petrol engine, but with a diesel manual one would usually start off with about 1500 rpm in first, whereas with an auto or DSG you start from nothing. Anyway no doubt you'll have a test drive to find out for yourself.

If you're the same Midlifecrisis as on the HJ forum (I'm Avant over there), you may remember Daveyjp who has had Audi A3 DIs with DSG and liked them.

Go for it, it gives you great relaxed driving over manual, just changed from manual Fabia to DSG Octavia 1.9tdi.
