rapid rear tyres wear in 4x4 Octavia

Featured Replies

There's 2002 Octavia 4x4 1.8T.

I bought it in April this year and done 5k miles, the mileage is now about 110k miles. At the moment of purchasing there were four tyres of the same type and I can say of the same condition. About, let's say, two months ago rear tyres began to wear rapidly and now they're slick, not almost slick but simply slick while front tyres are still in reasonable shape. I think front tyres have still about 3-4 mm of tread.

Any ideas/explanations what can cause such a different wear?

thanks in advance,

Michal

Did the car get a bang around when the wear rate changed?

No help I know but mine wear very evenly - at least they did before it was lowered!

I can't say when precisely rear tyres started to wear faster but AFAIR there was no exceptional banging sometimes pothole like most other cars I think.

Why are you asking? How a bang could make tyres wear faster? It's an even wear, I mean both whole surfaces of tyres are affected, not only outer or inner parts.

thanks,

Michal

I have had my 4x4 for 18 months, full set of new tyres just after I bought it , rears have always worn quicker in that time, about 12k miles for the first ones. Swapped fronts to the back with new on the front, about another 4k to finish off the rears ( swapped from front) and will be looking at new rears just after Christmas if I am lucky. Fronts have just been changed , got about16k miles from them. Done about 30k so far in it and tyres have been the main expense of servicing.

I assume that the 5,000 have been on the road and not on a track?

Do you tend to carry lots of heavy items in the boot / rear?

I can't say that I have really noticed any difference in the wear of my front and rear tyres but saying that they don't seem to last any thing like they do on my other car.. maybe its the way I drive it..

I'm of no use at all, but I read the title as 'rapid rear tyres - wear in 4x4?' I had visions of a very old Skoda and some hybrid 4x4 creation. Sorry.:o

A sudden change in wear rate like this can only be down to a few things:-

1) A change in rubber compound to something softer part-way through the tread depth, but if what you say is right the wear rate across all 4 tyres should have remained constant if this was true.

2) A change in use, like spending a lot of time carrying several cwt in the boot.

3) Suspension damage which affects the rear geometry. A heavier than expected thump dropping into a really deep pothole might do it.

4) Running rears consistently 2 PSI lower than you used to.

So I was asking about (3) because I thought you'd know about (2) and (4).

So I think the next things to do are check the tyre pressures all round using a BSI guage (Pen-type gauges are about £5 from Halfrauds and good accessory shops), and then a full geometry, making sure they have checked the rear thrust axis is correct.

Broken rear springs? MIne didn't seem to make any difference but I don't know how long they were broken.

  • 2 weeks later...

Completely even wear on all 4 of mine.

Replace all about every 10k with a few mill left.
