I've had it with my car.........

Featured Replies

In the last year I've paid out for the following:

50k service inc brake fluid

60k service

Cam belt change

New discs and pads all round

Off side window regulator

3x Punctures

4x new tyres

2x new glow plugs

And now apparently the near side front console bush needs replacing.

The only thing that's stopping me getting rid is the amount I've already spent. Grrrrr Rant over.

Services, cam belt changes, brake discs and pads, and tyres are all servicable and wearing items.

The only problems you've had are glow plugs (which arguably are going to wear anyway!), punctures - which you'd have got with any car - and the window regulator. So really the only problem that has been due to the car in the last year has been the window regulator...

You gonna find another car that only has one major thing go wrong in 12 months and over 10k of motoring after 50k miles having already been travelled? ;)

Not saying the Fabia is faultless and bulletproof but you really haven't had THAT bad a year with car reliability based on the list above...

Of those, I'd say the only items you couldn't anticipate were the punctures, glow plugs and window regulator. The rest are normal service and wear and tear.

I really don't see how you can blame the punctures or glow plugs (components every manufacturer buys in from the same few sources) on the car, so the only item that's VAG's fault is the regulator.

Yeah, I know you guys are right; it's just a lot to shell out on. The Cam belt, 60k service, a pair of tyres, discs & pads, console bush and glow plugs have all been in the last two and half months - pretty big bills in such a short space of time. Could have bought a half tidy run-around for what they've cost.

Just unlucky I guess........

And that run-around would eventually need a cambelt, big service, tyres.

There's always the bus if you don't like the big bills. :)

So just the console bushes to change, then you will have the perfect car and hopefully trouble free for a year or so. You are not the only one who has to dish out the dosh for car maintainance, we all have times when it's non stop pay out, if it's not the car then it will be the kids, holidays, washing machine etc. goes kaput.

You are not being victimised, Honest!

Does sound like a lot of expense, but you can't hold a grudge the car at all!!

I know the feeling, but It is good to know that because of that, providing you are keeping the car for a while, you won't have the same recurring expense for quite a while.

In about 6 months I've had to:

-Replace evap sensor

-Wheel alignment

-Regas air con

-Replace heater resistor

-Cambelt/Damper/Water pump/Alternator belt

-Major service including all filters

-2 new pads and discs

-New glass mirror (element went)

-New wipers

To be fair, a lot of those weren't essential but do make a difference to my enjoyment but hopefully the next 6 months will be a little lighter on the wallet!

i've just put some new aero wiper blades on mine :P

seriously though , as has been said, all you've had really is wear and tear items, you could preempt some of the expense by buying stuff when you have a bit of money, say the oil and filter for the next service, maybe when there is a deal to be had at MyTyres get 2 tyres

i bought 2 Toyos over a year ago when they were £57 each iirc, they sat in my shed until a month ago, there was some cheap steel wheels and tyres for sale the other nighton the forum , £100 all in , 2 of the tyres were brand new Toyos

and why don't you do some of the work yourself, that will save the labour charge

There's always the bus if you don't like the big bills. :)

Have you been on a bus recently? I havent since a lad till last week when i got one to the shops (to take road tax for my Fabia) . . . Cost me £2.70 for something that was 39pence when we were nippers! I couldnt believe it! :thumbdwn:

Trust me OP - the Fabia is cheaper!

It's all wear and tear, just do less miles

I've had my fabia not long over a year now and its had

40k service which was done only a few weeks after getting the car !

50k service

60k service (not due for another 2k yet but still has to be done)

Cam belt and water pump at 60k

All new discs and pads

4 tyres

cupra and powerflex bushes done (no labour charge just bought parts)

MOT

The 60k service and cambelt/water pump change is going to be pricey :(

Can't expect cars to run forever and not go through wear and tear items. I like my Furby so much, I don't mind [a] having it serviced properly, and throwing money at it, if something goes wrong. If I have any gripe at all about car costs, it's the amount of fuel duty with VAT on top of that.

Now that the initial shock has worn off, I’ve managed to climb back down off the ceiling. Hopefully, as has been said above, the next 6-12 months will be relatively pain-free. I guess if you can’t sound off on an online forum where can you?

In response to the suggestion that I do some of the work myself, you must be kidding!!! Fixing my botched DIY attempts – now that would be expensive. Seriously, I wish I had the knowhow but I wouldn’t know where to start. I was well chuffed with myself when I changed the air filter and swapped out a glow plug the other week. I’m working up to an oil change.

Id also agree on wear/ tear but one thing you can consider, if you do standard dealers service is to either consider if its out of warranty and any other place you can trust;

or have it done by dealer and shop about. I found a difference of £100 on a MINOR service in 2 different locations but only about 50 miles between them (also near parents so useful for just dropping in for a coffee etc).

No brainer there, although I was happy with the dealer I chose, I referred to the other one instead for my services (further from the SE) and will no doubt save a ton.

In the last 2 years and 59k the Roomster has had...... 2 sets of wiper blades :D and a set of tyres

Oh and It will be getting it's 6th service in the next month along with some new front pads, and another set of tyres

:D

Decron was it you that also had problems with paint peeling on a roomster? Maybe that's something to do with pressure washer habits if it's happened on two cars in a row? ;)

Ohh I almost forgot about that :embarassed:

Nah, the laquer cracked on the VRS and quite a few people had the same issue. The Roomster was a stone chip that just got caught by the hose, rarely use a pressure washer. I used to wash the VRS nearly every weekend. I have washed to Roomster about 5 times since I have had it which is why I was a bit miffed when the paint came off, but ultimately that was down to the stone chip damage.

embarrassed :P

That too

The swear word filter is there for a reason.

To the OP: I understand where you’re coming from. As much as most of us are resigned to the fact that it costs money to run and maintain a vehicle (and that’s without modding it), you can still feel the pain when you reckon up how much you spend in a year. This year alone, I’ve spent out on 4 new tyres, a 4-wheel alignment, new front discs and pads, 1 set of front and rear wipers, and 2 oil + filter changes. I’m fortunate enough that I can do pretty much all of the maintenance myself, but it still all adds up. The only other thing which costs as much to maintain is the missus:) - I often contemplate getting rid of both and start working from home lol.

Could never go over to public transport again though – I lived in Germany for 3 years where the transport network is über-efficient, and apart from using the tube in big inner-cities which is a must, I despised using it. So, I’ll run my car for as long as I can afford to, and Jeremy Clarkson for Prime Minister lol.

You've just hit a more expensive stage in the car's life. They tend to come and go :)

Relax, and enjoy the car! It's a machine after all, which needs servicing/looking after/maintained if it's to continue to work to the best of its abilities.

Steve

I have had my (Octavia) VRS for one year (almost) and the costs I have had with this thing is close to 2.5K!

I have also upgraded parts, but still have had lots of little repairs that all add up and when I sat down to add all that up it was eye watering.

Still love the car though and will probably keep for a while longer and no doubt many more miles.
