Yeti without spare wheel

Featured Replies

I have ordered the Yeti without the spare wheel - didn't get chance to see what this was like as all the dealer cars had the spare fitted.

For any Yeti owners out there - who have elected for the "standard no spare wheel configuration" - now you have the car what are your views on the boot space?

I went for the space option over "what if I get a damaged tyre", but I'm not confident that was a good/wise decision at the moment.

Any views appreiciated.

Taken the wheel out of my car, as it'll be the wrong size when I get my new wheels on, to be replaced with a can of tyre weld, and a compressor.

I can fully understand the attraction of the additional space, but I have a YETI with a spare wheel. My reasoning was that if you have a puncture which, under normal circumstances, could be repaired, a spare wheel is the answer, because once you fill your tyre with the gunk, it cannot be repaired.

On the other hand you may need the additional space, and you may never get a puncture.

So it is probably down to personal preference and attitude to risk.

the god of punctures is already rubbing his/her hands in glee about me!

i went for no spare based on the fact I've done over 150k miles over the last 5yrs and used a spare once....bear in mind i've also had full rac cover for this time, i thought screw it i want the space.

PS all this isnt sheer bravado

I learned a long time ago that winter tyres are a must in this end of rural scotland so ....it also helps that i've ordered 4 extra wheels for winter tyres!

i.e if i wake up in the morning and a tyre is flat i'm not completely screwed!

Hi Scunjee

Similar thoughts to me .... plus ...

We've moved to the NE of Scotland last November. In Feb we had 4ft of snow overnight and -16C temps. The roads were a mess for a fortnight and the 1.2 Clio left 1mile from the house as we couldn't get it up the hill!!

I can well understand the winter tyre preference!

What Winter tyres/wheels will you be running on the Yeti - if you don't mind my inquiring?

Thanks

Graham

My old touran had "no spare, but gunk" and had quite a few punctures ! This included one on the M6 where my Mrs chose to drive to the next exit for safety reasons - new tyre required.

Touran replacement (Smax) came with optional runflats / tpms.

I've ordered Yeti with a spare, and also with TPMS - feel with the M6 example above, my Mrs would have probably got more of an advances warning.

I figure (although I don't know !) that I can remove spare/jack etc when not required (e.g. usual commute is 8 miles per way) - or take the Smax.

I have ordered the Yeti without the spare wheel - didn't get chance to see what this was like as all the dealer cars had the spare fitted.

Also decided to dispense with the spare wheel because load space is a lot better without (and I have never had a blow-out).

My only concern is a puncture that the gunk will not fix off-road where the AA/RAC cannot reach me. But I do not go very far off-road so keeping my fingers crossed!

Graeme.

hola grahamar,

if i'd have really thought about it I'd have gone for 16" jobbies, more choice....however, after so much procrastination on elegence or not, this or that or not when ordering the wee beasty we decided bugger it, bought another set of spitzberg 17" to maintain "the look"

i'm a fan of continental tyres for cars and swear blind by them on my octy so i'll probably end up with the winter version of them on my "winter rims".

winter wheels and tyres (+£1k and last +3 seasons) are cheap if you factor in the grief and cost of insurance hikes etc if yer car off is a right off....especially if it aint yer fault! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr still a sore subject!

best thing about winter tyres is that they aren't just for snow..... sub 5 degrees, honking down, they work amazingly well at clearing water and stopping...... based on the last few years in aberdoomshire this is a must. i do 60-80miles a day in all manner of foulness and based on my annual mileage it's worth it 4 months a year.

Does this apply in the UK?

I'm thinking about changing the 06 plate Fabia combi (1.9TDIPD)for a Yeti, prob CR140 on an SE. The scooshy bottle doesn't really make much sense to me on a 4x4 where, with even moderate track use, tyre wall damage is a hazard which the gunk wouldn't have a hope of filling. Mrs Badger is a GP and she really can't be doing up a farm track with a shredded tyre and a scooshy bottle. So I'm thinking about getting the spare wheel and not worrying about the boot space - if I need boot space I'll take my Octy Scout!!

Yes, I know, 2x4x4s, I'm mad.

Anyone know if the boot space/well is the same just minus the wheel....i.e is the mounting bracket that holds the wheel in place still in the boot well or is that removed?

I'm just wondering .... so that if I "really" needed to put a spare back in - would it be an easy retro fit?

Thanks

Graham

.

Common misconception. They can be repaired, but tyre places don't like it as it's messy and takes them longer to repair, so they lose money on a "flat-rate repair" pricing.
