scary depreciation

Featured Replies

its a long story but we might be selling the superb. 1.8TSi DSG with few extras (park asist, rear airbags, met paint, . list price over £24k .registered on 6th jan 2009. just been offered.....wait for it .....£13.5k :eek:

now i know depreciation in the 1st year is heavy but to be only worth 56% of list price after 10 months does seem very scary indeed !

You're lucky you didn't buy a Vectra ;)

It may have a list price of 24k , but most sales would be a couple of grand lower - lets say 22k.

Then take into account the VAT which is effectively lost straight away - about 2.8K , so the car excluding tax has cost £19.2k.

The drop to 13.5k is still a lot , but not quite as shocking , and don't forget that the dealers know that you probably *need* to sell and think they have you over a barrel.

Tell the dealer to get to fook and sell it privately (unless you are desperate for the quick sale and then they do have you ovar a barrel!). Then use the cash from the sale to get a better price on your next motor with a 'paying today in cash' type of deal.

Depreciation is a fierce lady but she is unavoidable i'm afraid.

My Mk1 Superb L&K was over £23k when new, I bought it at 14 months old for £10695 (think what the dealer must have bought it for).

Much as I was addicted to the new car smell, I will never buy new again and always buy ex-demo or 12 month old cars from now on. :)

After selling cars for a living a while back , i agree with the gangsta homie dude, would never buy new .

Thats a good kick in the bits tho .

The extras dont really add anything to the value when it comes to resale, especially P/exchange. They might help you to get slightly more if you sell privately however.

The worst scenario is to trade your car when it is almost new. I for one would avoid a car that is almost new and just a grand or two different from new price and buy a brand new one instead. So the dealer has to price the used car accordingly. Notwithstanding the dealers margin the depreciation will look a bit more "sensible" after two or three years. I would certainly expect to realise quite a lot more cash in a private sale as the buyer would have the reassurance of the outstanding warranty

Word.

This is what most people forget. Also in Germany. We have 19% Mehrwertsteuer.

Was that a trade in offer?? and against what?

The words seen and coming spring to mind but if you've no choice....

And was that price with 16" or 18" wheels?

If a dealer has to add in the price of 4 Elegance wheels and 4 tyres, that will cost about £1500

well - it had the 16" wheels on when i went but it woudl have the original 17" wheels on it if i did trade it in. to be honest the dealer didnt have a clue as it wasnt a skoda dealer. as long as its got teh 17" wheels on it I dont think they will care.

we might not sell it, just toying with ideas at the moment as we might need an MPV. would be a touran or an smax i think. can get crasy deals on fords at the moment with drive the deal so may sell the superb privately. 1.8TSi manual SE are going for 15k at the moment so with an elegance and DSG would try for 16k.

Was the price offered by the same dealer who has had your car in umpteen times to cure the alarm problems ?

if you read my post you will see i said "to be honest the dealer didnt have a clue as it wasnt a skoda dealer"

also had an offer of 14.5k today which feels a bit better !

It won't be scary when they put it out front for £17995, I think you should autotrader it for around £16495 and drop the odd if you get a taker, then hit the dealers for a 2.5k discount on what you want next, that way you'll be 5k better off overall, check the Superb prices, I've yet to see a diesel dsg elegance for less than 18k usually 20k, so given that yours is petrol but has the dsg someone giving you £16k for it is a 2k saving to them over a dealer, everybody wins.
