"Do not jack on sills" Stickers - any interest?

Hi Guys

Rob originally spoke to me about getting these produced based on the success of the bonnet and boot replacements produced here

However I completely missed this thread :(

I can get something produced in a similar way to the group buy badges - coloured vinyl printed with the final design and then finished with a clear resin and self adhesive backing.

If someone can put a list of names and quantities together and come up with a final design I can let you know the pricing

Yellow background (to match all paint colors) and black script for legibility.

15 cms. long.

To read over two lines:

Idea... Make them a magnetic fridge magnet type thing rather than a sticker.

Keep them in the glove box / boot / spare wheel well and whack them on the bottom of the doors when your car goes into a garage.

That way they can be made bigger / more obvious and you don't have to see them the 99.x% of the time your car's not in a garage.

Cracking idea Nick, but I'm such a dumb donkey, I'd forget to put them on :S

I am really curious. Most cars have jacking point on the sills, normally two reinforced point on both sides. What is wrong with using them? Where else should most cars be jacked up from? If you feel that the jacking points are too flimsy, instead of going to all of the trouble of printing out labels that will most probably be ignored anyway, why not have reinforcement plates welded over the jacking points so that no damage can possibly occur.

I know that mechanics will often ignore advice about not ding this or that, they are a breed apart, they do not spend time reading manuals or labels. They just do it and brake it, then blame you. It is in their DNA. they do not like advice about cars it just winds them up, they look at you as if yer, yer what do you know, go away we know how to do it, crunch. I have had specialist vehicles for years, decades, it matters not where you take them. If it says do not do this or you tell them, sure enough that is exactly what they will do. It is if telling them not to actually puts it into their brain and they read do it. Don,t forget, they always know best. :giggle:

The "jacking points" are designed for the OEM scissor jack (aka The Widdow Maker), and not for conventional trolly jacks, or 2-post ramp jacking pads.

The point is, mere inches from the sill jacking points are suitable points for using other jacks, which are ignored by the knuckle-dragging incompetent oafs who generally work in this type of places!

One wonders, most garages that I know use the 4 posters, they will use trolley jacks very occasionally, back street garages often just use trolley jacks for practically anything. I am quite happy for them to use a trolley jack on the sill if that is what they want to use. As I have said if it was a problem, I would just have the sill points beefed up. Putting stickers on will not stop them, its a mentality thing, you would need to stand over them and then their would be resentments from some places depending how close their DNA was to the chimp. Better garages have a far better mentality but they still take short cuts some of which are bad practice. Those people who have really good independent garages with mechanics that hey can trust and respect are very fortunate and should treat them like gold dust because they are few and far between.

It would not bother me so far as sills are concerned what jack they used but if their is a concern reinforce it.

So you wouldn't mind them using their trolley jacks on your already reinforced sills if it just happened to fold over the metal creases on your car emoticon-0106-crying.gif

We already know it's a bad design but short of awaiting a newer redesigned car we have to put up with what's there.

Following on from you logic, why not ask them to clean your windows at the same time with some emery cloth - after all - isn't 'emery' just a type of cloth. It must therefore be okay for using on your windows -surely?

I have never had a problem in well over 30 years. That is why I am unconcerned. Putting stickers on in my opinion will not prevent it anyway. Are you suggesting that they read.

Hmmm, I've not had a car accident in the past 30 years but it doesn't mean that a dyslexic tyre fitter isn't going to run in to me the next time I take my car out does it!

If people feel better by putting these stickers at least they'll have cause for recompense if the metal is folded over afterwards. I'd personally rather oversee anything that was happening to my car to prevent it but I'm also a realist and know this isn't practicable

If you were to update your profile we could see what car you have Anthony - I'm guessing it's not an Octavia?

Anyway, I think that this topic is a good idea but in a land of free speech, everyone to their own eh?

See this thread for the lengths people have to go to to prevent sill damage.

An Octavia no. I have 6 vehicles at the present moment in time. I hope that your labels have the effects that you desire, I would be surprised if they are taken notice of however but let us hope so for you guys. Do Octavias have particularly bendy sills?
