which engine to choose...?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a nearly new Octavia Estate, probably Elegance or SE, and am unsure about which engine to go for....

I do 16k-18k per annum probably 25% Town/35% Dual Carriage Way/30% Motorway

I'm interested in a Diesel and so would like to understand the pros and cons of the 1.6 versus 1.9 versus 2.0 aside from the obvious fuel comsumption and acceleration...

Is the 1.6 enough for an estate....? of should I go for 1.9 and I assume 2.0 is really for extra speed and acceleration....?

Many thanks in advance....

Cheers

Graham

There's no contest between the 1.6 and the 1.9 - the 1.6 is much better. The 2.0 is more powerful, but a bit peaky and noisy. Don't worry about it only being a 1.6 - it's plenty powerful enough and the economy will put an even bigger smile on your wallet.

I'm guessing the low tax band is also likely to improve residuals, certainly compared to the 1.9.

1.9 doesn't exist!

1.6 or 2.0 :)

Has it gone now? Oh well. I'm sure it won't be long before we get the 2.0CR. That should be nice, although it's unlikely to benefit from the economy and lower tax band of the 1.6 making the choice a bit easier.

The 1.6 was developed to replace the 1.9, as they couldn't get the 1.9 to pass Euro 5 emissions. I think!

The 1.6 CR and the 1.9 PD Diesels produce pretty much identical power and torque, so given the choice the 1.6 is the better one to get (If you're buying second hand it will be almost impossible to get a 1.6 CR though as this engine is still very new).

I do like the shove the PD engine gives when you hit 2000-2500 rpm though - this is replaced by linear acceleration and something around 10 mpg better fuel consumption on the 1.6, so I don't think anyone will complain :)...

Only reason to stay with the PD is if you're planning on tuning the life out of it as there are plenty of proven remaps and bolt on upgrades for the 1.9's on the market.

ok, firstly thanks for all your prompt and very useful replies...I just want to clarify that the recommendations are to go for the 1.6 or 2.0 CR rather than PD engines...? So on an Elegance it is just the 1.6 that is available currently...? the 2.0 seems to be just for the higher spec cars at the moment...? whereas there seem to be plenty of 2.0 PDs around in an Elegance model....

Thanks again for your help

Unless things have changed very recently, the 2.0CR isn't available at all in the Octavia. As it's used in other VW group cars, it should only be a matter of time. I'm assuming they're just using up old stock of PD engines and, as usual, Skoda get the dregs. I suppose it's the price you pay for not having to pay VW prices, if that makes any sense.

Oops! I was forgetting the 2.0CR as fitted to the vRS. I meant the 2.0 CR 140.

1.9 doesn't exist!

I hope it does, I'm waiting for mine to arrive

As said above, 1.6 if you want economy and a smooth quiet ride or the 2.0 if you want the extra power at the extra expense of economy, tax and noise.

As I drive like a granddad on a Sunday afternoon, I'd go for the 1.6 :D

Yours will be last of the line then.

will a 1.6 go for 100k + miles....?

Not on one tank of fuel :P...

All engines - well maintained - should last well over 100,000 miles.

You would be very well served with the 2.0 PD 140 HP. It has the 4 valves per cylinder and is very snappy. I drive a 2005 Octy Combi Elegance with this engine and have 120,000 km on the clock. Average fuel economy around 17 km/l - not a single problem since they fixed a broken bonnet release cable the first week. The pronounced power surge around the 2500 rpm is just at the right spot for fast passing on the motorway in 6th.

Where do you do the other 10%?

In space?

Get a 1.8 TSi petrol and be REALLY happy!

Until the credit card bill comes in.

Where do you do the other 10%?

A and/or B roads out of town that aren't dual carriage way I would suspect, which is where I do about 90% of my milage :D
