How noisy is your wiper motor?

Featured Replies

Having bought my car without testing the windscreen wipers further than a quick do they work?, I've found that when used in anger there is a noticeable whine from where I expect the motor to be. To give an idea of volume, it only starts to be overtaken by road noise at about 60 mph.

I'd say that the motor is on the way out and I'm looking to change it. However, I've not been in any other Octavia so I don't know if this is normal.

I've got a trusty Haynes manual to help do the job, so doing it will cost between £15 (ebay 2nd hand) & £92 (dealer new part) plus, if my last one is anything to go by, half the skin on my knuckles (I had a Renault where the wipers worked perfectly except when wet & I had several abortive attempts at fixing the motor cheaply).

Can anyone put my mind at rest before I lay out my money - how noisy is your wiper motor?

Not half as noisy as what I imagine yours is from the description given. I've always noticed the rear one seems alot noisier than the front. Would you not say the same for yours?

The front wiper motor on mine is quiet. Perhaps the wiper spindles are starting to seize up on yours?

Quite a common failing on Golf IV, A3 Mk1 and Octavia Mk1 and probably Leon too.

my wiper motor is very noisy indeed, has been for last 18 months, hasn't got any worse so haven't bothered to replace it yet. if it aint broke, don't fix it! :) although i will be cursing myself for not changing it when it does fail, more than likely when i'm driving home in the dark and its ****ing down.....

Mine has a very annoying squeek from the drivers side arm. I know its that one because if I lift it off the screen, it stops. If i only lift it off a little bit, (1-2mm) it still squeeks. Got a feeling the joint is wearing out.

When my spindles seized up, there was no extra noise, just juddering movement, so I would suspect maybe your motor or a joint somewhere in the linkage.
