Oil seeping out form oil cap. Normal?

Featured Replies

Hey guys and gals,

When I got the vrs a few months ago, the top of the engine and around the oil filler cap was nice and oily so I cleaned it all off with gunk and put it all back together.

I took the cover off a few days ago to fit some new spark plugs, and I have noticed that oil has seeped out from under the filler cap again.

Is this normal? My old toledo (1.8 non turbo (AGN)) didn't do this at all in the 2 years I owned it. Maybe it's down to the fact that it's a turbocharged car and the crankcase is at higher than atmospheric pressure.

Today, I did a boost leak test by connecting a compressor to the vac lines and blocking off the air intake. Didn't find any leaks, but found that I could only build up 15 psi with the oil cap on. If I took the cap off, all the pressure leaked out, along with a lovely gurgling sound.

I've cleaned the seal on the oil cap too, and it does fit on quite tight.

Check your breaker pipes are not blocked up.

It sounds like you've got crankcase pressurisation for some reason.

Start by checking the breather pipes and the cap filter. If that doesn't cure it, get a compression test done.

Also, is there any sign of piston slap (a sort of whoosh whoosh whoosh noise) when the engine is cold and idling, but the secondary air pump has cut off?

What the hell? More people than this have already replied to this post, including me!

Guess it's something to do with the server problems.

Yep, all posts from the small hours of Friday to around 6pm yesterday were lost. This also includes any PMs sent in this time, along with any new members who registered.

IIRC one of the missing posts suggested replacing the oil filler cap.

Ken, haven't noticed any piston slap, the engine sounds fine.

This weekend, I'm probably gonna take all the breathers off and have a spring clean and get a new oil cap I think.

I'll let you know.

Broken pcv valve?

I know it can be a problem on the Mk2 but not heard of it on the Mk1 before but maybe worth a check.
