New Discs and pad time!!

Featured Replies

I've searched and searched and searched but am after some advice on brakes. My rear discs are shot and the fronts are a little lipped so I am looking at getting the lot changed as I'm feeling a little flush.I was planning on going with something like these but with the EBC red stuff pads, I like the look of grooved and drilled discs http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360183215194&_trksid=p2759.l1259 My main question is ....... are they any good? When the pads get low will they set of the warning light on the dash or will only OEM ones do that?Any suggestions? I would like to improve on the stock brakes but don't think the stock ones are that bad, but every little helps!CheersMike

I wouldn't bother with drilled, they can be prone to cracking if you do track days etc. Grooved are better for stopping but you'll get through pads quicker. Personally, unless you're doing track days, I think the standard discs with maybe some uprated pads will be more than adequate. I'm just going for a Mintex brake box set next but I've had standard discs and pads on for nearly 2 years now and no issues. I don't get to test that often though

Aghhhh, you can't do returns or smilies :-(

Just put stock on mine last week and they are more than fine £90 against £190

And if you don,t do track days they aren,t needed, just for the look mainly

I won't be doing any track days, I was more concerend with improving the stopping power so my missus doesn't rear end someone like she did in my old Mondeo. So maybe go for mintex discs all round with EBC redstuff pads?

Any quality discs work just fine with the EBC red ceramic assuming as you said, you're not tracking it.

Cheers guys, where is it best to get dics from? Also do the EBC pads set off the warning light when low? I have been told to get the yellow ones are they much better than the reds?

Yes the reds have brake sensor in them.

The yellows might stop a bit better when warm, but require getting up to temperature to be effective. The reds work just fine from cold.

Also the yellows dust up a lot and the red don't IMHO.

Thanks mate, so Reds it is then. Now one final question where best to get discs from?

Get a decent brand from GSF or ECP?

As for the wear sensors, I meant to say, I don't know if the yellow has it or not.

If you want upgrade discs and do alot of track days then EBC Grooved and dimpled (TGDs) are the way to go. The only problem is they are very NOISY under medium or hard braking. If you want quieter ones then their black slotted Ultimax are very good. Standard plain ones are still adequate for normal driving. As for pads, I run Greenstuff on my Fabia and have done on previous cars, but EBC pads are not liked by people on here (or at least in the Fabia section). As mentioned above, Redstuff (or Yellow for Trackdays or lots of brisk driving) is probably reconmended for your car. If you don't choose EBC then go for Mintex or Ferodo. I have read Ferodo DS2500 are highly reconmended by others, but are very expensive.

But reds do?

But reds do?

I have reds and reds have the cable coming off for the sensor, which is plugged in.

Bear in mind it's just two bits of wire that complete the circuit when worn and that it's only a single pad that has the sensor in. Same for the OEM pads, so the system is of limited value anyway.

I didn't think you could still get these? I coud be wrong

It's the Mintex Xtremes that you can't get anymore. I'm sure you can still get the Ferodos.

Thanks mate. I'll have a look later
