Can it really be so?

Featured Replies

When you're bored, waiting for your new Octy Estate to be built and delivered, and Briskoda is offline depriving you from looking at pictures of members shiny new blue VRs hatches, what else is there to do than browse the specs of the car you're so impatiently waiting for... and then you notice that your boot (volume in litres) with the seats up is bigger than any other estate in it's class at a massive 580L

Can this really be so? Bigger than:

Audi A4 Avant 490L

BMW 3 Series Tourer 460L

Ford Mondeo 542L

Honda Accord 406L

Mazda 6 519L

Merc C-Class 485L

Peugeot 407SW 430L

Renault Laguna 501L

Renault Megane 524L

Subaru Legacy 459L

Volvo V70 575L

VW Passat 513L

Only the Volvo V70 gets close! Please don't tell me it's a Skoda misprint in the specs?

Funny you should post this, I was only 'playing top trumps' with a couple of guys from work on the WhatCar website the other day.

I do find some of the figures hard to fathom - I would have thought the Accord would have had a bigger boot

Yes, and nasty ppl say that the Superb Estate trunk is not really bigger either.

Skoda just included the space left by the missing spare wheel. Without this Octavia/Superb are almost the same....

Hmm, I wondered if it was related to the dipped, non-flat loading bay area enabling Skoda to get more litres out of the Octavia compared to their competitors by not measuring like for like.

That surprised me too - the Accord was the smallest by far according to WhatCar stats.

The last Accord Tourer had the biggest boot in its class, the latest one is a lot smaller. The rear window is a lot more sloped.

The latest Accord definitely has a disappointing boot. The saloon has more space than the tourer!!

Did like it as a car though, was just a little bit too much £££ for me :(

Suprised the Octy Estate has a bigger boot than the Mondeo and V70, not suprised its bigger than the rest though, its huge!! The hatch is nearly as good too :)

Only one that surprised me really was the Mondeo - because that looks hugely long compared to the Octavia, so you naturally assume the boot will be bigger.

The Accord seems to have turned into what they call a 'lifestyle estate', which generally don't have the carrying capacity as a 'normal estate'

Talk about suprising boots - that Megane is a real suprise!!

I thought the Passat would have been bigger than the Octavia, so that's what originally got me looking, and the more I compared it to others, the more I was surprised that nothing beat it.

The boot in the Passat was said to be smaller in a recent test in Performance Car magazine (as was the Insignia)

Its mahoosive, I love it

You've got A4 and BMW 3 series on your list, but its also bigger than an A6 avant (565) and a BMW FIVE series Touring (500).

To get anything bigger you need to go to an E-Class estate at 690 litres - and a similarly massive price tag ;-)

Yes, I saw the E-Class, but didn't look at the A6 or 5 series BMW. Unbelievable :D

No it may not be so - at least not on the estates. There is no industry standard measure of luggage space. Here is an extract from one review site...

Luggage capacity, expressed in litres, when all folding, removable or stowable seats are removed, folded or stowed. Caution - some car makers quote up to window level, some above. This is significant in estate or MPV type body styles.

The handbook on my old "R" reg Astra estate said it had a luggage capacity of 1550 litres. The Octavia estate is 1655 and the Mondeo estate is 1733. The Honda estate is quoted as 1183 but is obviously using a different measuring system.

I spent some time during the summer looking at this as luggage space for my new estate was an important buying factor for me. The Mondeo Estate has a much bigger usable boot but other factors eventually swung it the Octavias way for me.

Official figures for the Superb Estate: 603 Litre. Octavia: 580 Litre. No relevant difference. Superb is just a longer Octavia between the axes.
