Ebay TIP Surprise!!!!!!!!!

Featured Replies

Went to the post office today to collect a "small white box" hoping it was the TIP I bought on Ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350243516840&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT $75 :D but it was my "free to good home DV" courtesy of rk696 cheer Richard "there should be a thumbup here but they are one of the things Colin is still working on :D" SO I was happy anyway as the DV is in top condition. When I got home this evening though I had a nice courier style bag from China so today has been like an early Christmas :D :D :D ..... Now the purchase of this TIP was not straightforward. Oh no. I emailed the seller a total of 6 times to try and clarify if the TIP on offer was the one in the top picture (which looked like it could possible be the right one for the K03/s if you squinted and imagined the extra bits were hidden behind somewhere!) or the bottom pics (which looked very much like K04 ones). Turns out they had been on holiday so I had a flood of responses when they were back in the office, so after another "Are you sure" email I went ahead and ordered. An extra 9 days wait as I wanted it in Black and they didn't keep black in stock. All I can say about the TIP that arrived is WOOHOO! The TIP is branded S4MC0 in a Retail display bag and it is the right one for the car. Result, chuffed, happy, relieved, are some of the words to describe how I feel, as having been made redundant and still not in a proper job I really shouldn't be spending money on the car, but as bargains go this is right up there with the "BOGOF Forge DV escapade" The moral of the story is that although it is safer to buy branded from a store around the corner, if you happen to get the Chinese firm that actually makes the parts for the "BRAND" selling for themselves on Ebay you really can get a bargain. Will try and post a pic tomorrow (can't find the card reader?)

lol nice one mate,

I got a metal one like the Neuspeed one form a place in america lol, cost me £70 total inc PnP and it is the same as the neusped one lol jus doesnt say neuspeed on it. and for nearly half the price I am happy. makes a nice diff too.

Newbe question ........... What does it do?

Turbo Inlet Pipe (TIP) it is the bit that sits between the airbox/filter and the Turbo. the standard one is part rubber(which can collapse at high RPM's blocking the air flow) and part metal (which is a bit on the narrow side, again restricting the amount of air in to the turbo). The aftermarket ones are usually a larger diameter, so more air flow and made of Silicone which is reinforced so they dont suffer from collapsing. HTH

Good find buddy thats a good price. I never noticed much difference myself but I think the turbo sounded louder :)

I think I have had the collapsing TIP problem when it gets over 6k as the power drop is almost like hitting the brake and having seen the diameter of the metal pipe it must make a bit of difference :D

Much as I can see why you're happy, I bet samco would be pretty p*ssed if that's happening.

I mean if they had contract manufactured the goods, and the CEM was then making extras and flogging them for their own profit. I mean you have IP violations all over that before you even start on the copyright violations from using the name.

I know, that was the second thing that went through my mind after WooHoo :D Ultimately MOST stuff seems to be manufactured in China now and whilst there is a really big problem with imitation goods being produced there are always going to be items that are multi branded so it depends whether S4mc0 did the development work and logged the patent/copyright etc. I see it in IT products as well, very often a service is produced by a software house and then rebranded for resellers etc. I am just glad that I ended up with a known brand product, I would have been equally happy if it had the Nuts.Motorsport branding as the quality is great. I took a similar leap of faith when I purchased the Eurojet Y and lower pipes from the states as there were no UK supplied alternatives at the time.

Did I not hear some where that there is no copyright in China

A lot of companies do all the design work, send it out there to be made, then find a few other companies seem to have their blueprints which have been sold to the highest bidder.

The problem you have with this, is really do you know it's a samco pipe, or a knock off?

It might be the same design, but is it the same grade of metal/plastic or is it a cheaper one. You can't tell until it's too late.

In this case you might well be fine, but it causes problems, especially when these issues get into genuine branded knock off versions of drugs or food etc.

Or Turbos that explode!!!!! or brake pads/calipers/carriers that self destruct.

well it would have nothing to do with samco if it from abroad as samco make all there stuff themselves in this country. so these will be nothing like the real samco and not even same material etc etc it will be there own and as the name isnt the same thats fine. quality will not be anywhere near the real deal but if it does the job and doesnt leak who cares.so to sum it up samco make all there own hoses in house in this country they do not get other people to make them that will be forge and other makes ]hope thats cleared it up

p.s your facts are incorrect buddy -

Cheer Clive. So having looked at Samco's website this is a copy. OK not such a bargain then but still looks good quality and cant be as bad as the soft rubber one on there at the moment. Will have to suck it and see I suppose

I would just try it on the car myself ...................

I should have pointed out that I wasn't basing my comments on knowledge of SAMCO and their manufacturing lines, but on a case of what might happen to contract manufactured goods in such circumstances. So if everything is made in the UK, then fair enough, I was using it as an example which I now know to be incorrect.

The point I was trying to make is that people selling cheap knock off' copies can damage a companies reputation.

I've edited the original post to clear this up.

Haha always there for the punchline fatty! I'm a 'TIP' sceptic! Replacing a nice bolt on aluminium pipe and reinforced rubber intake hose, with a long silicone hose and jubilee clip to the comp cover seems like a backwards step. I'd rather have just a better flowing aluminium pipe like the Neuspeed one, with the standard hose. I'd only change that to silicone if mine was damaged or I wanted a colourful engine (like the Samco one Westallc has). Zero flow gains on that though, as it's exactly the same size and shape. Do the standard rubber hoses really collapse?? I can't really imagine it happening to be honest. The hose is so short, supported at both ends, and reinforced with ribs and all the various inlets. If it did suddenly collapse at 6000rpm, I'm fairly sure the turbo would have a fit! The silicone full length hoses look like they could collapse though. The Chinese copy companies normally buy the drawings, and just start making to the drawings. But rarely understand tolerancing and material specs, and never undertake any testing. Plenty of cheap Chinese copied turbos, but very few that don't self destruct by the end of the road!

I've seen a vid at some point showing a TT pipe collapsing, but it may have been running a big turbo, which sucks like a ten dollar scrubber.

I'll see if I can find it.

Got it http://www.forgemotorsport.co.uk/media/intake.mpg

nice vid dave, It has prob only got the std air box on it too, which will limit the aire getting in and so it tries to get air from somewhere else ie outside so the softest bit colapses,

I got nice metal Neuspeed copy that fits perfectly and at half the price, I was the same as Bodge, didnt fancy fitting a silicone pipe direct to the turbo and having it secured with a jubilee clip, so I sold my Autobahn 888 one that was fron china and it was pritty good, the the other ones that came in the set are all perfect so far. again that was £45 for a TIP 4ply, not bad really.

but to be honest tho who actually does 5500+ rpm? for any length of time,

Ahh muchos gratis! That looks like a different setup to ours, with a rubber lower hose, opposed to the ally pipe we have as standard. Was that an early 1.8T or something, which got revised, or just a different fitment in the TT? Odd. Cheers for the vid anyway. Proves it can happen!

have u got this fitted yet mate??

Yeah im thinking of getting a metal one rather then the silicone pipe, did you notice any improvements? i dont want to spend out for one and not gain anything, as they cost a fair bit. Cheers

so where did u get the metal copys from.any links

Not fitted yet. I would have liked the Neuspeed one as it is the lower piece that seems to be the most restrictive. But being redundant means the budget is all gone

i am really not a fan of the full length silicone intake pipe. i just dont think it can be secured that well.this is why i went for the oversized ABD tip and a custom made silicone pipe from samco to mimic the oem pipe. the samco hose will flow the same as oem it is soley for looks not more power where as the oversized tip is for more power....even on standard setup the gain isnt really that noticeable if im honest. just another mod signed off lolhope this helps
