Dent removal Silver Octavia passenger door

Featured Replies

I've got an 08 Skoda Octavia elegance estate(metallic silver) that recently had another car door open on and put a shallow dent that is approximately the size of a 50 pence on the middle of driver side passenger door. The dent hasn't cracked the paint. I had a guy round from chipsaway and after a short inspection he told me that the dent couldn't be pushed out from the inside as he couldn't get access due to a impact bar and various other obstructions inside the door. I also read a similar post here mentioning a plate riveted inside the doors of Octavia's making this type of repair difficult??? I then took the car to a Skoda dealer who gave me a quote for £350 to remove the dent spray the door and blend it in with the drivers door and rear quarter. The guy in the dealer did suggest taking it to a dent/scratch repairer but I mentioned I had already tried that. It's a pretty minor dent but on a relatively new unmarked car it sticks out like a sore thumb. Has anyone else managed to have this type of dent remove without having to resort to respraying the door e.t.c ? I'm going to call some other dent/scratch repairers to see if any other repairers have more experience of this type of damage on Octavias but would appreciate others comments and suggestions, Thanks Martin

I've seen some suction devices work on small smooth dents, but can't help feeling it may result in a bump if the metal has deformed that much. Do you have a Satnav suction mount? If so, I'd be tempted to try it on the dent, or a substitute 'stunt' panel of similar construction.

Any decent PDR guy should be able to sort it, even without access to the back. It can be heated, pulled and also, even with impact bar, there are varies tools that can be adapter to reach it. Try another PDR specalist!

As above, may be worth trying another smart repair company. I used to use Chipsaway but they said they couldn't fix a couple, similar to yours. I now use another company & he has done fantastic repairs. It depends how good the technician is I guess, whoever they work for. Silver is tough to do a good job on (mine is same as yours). Any mark or imperfection will stand out..

Dentmaster?

Had exactly the same problem when parked at Sainsburys Calais next to a 4x4 on a windy day - the kid holding the next door's car door open obviously couldn't take the strain and I came out to find the 4x4 owner (bxxxxxd) had driven off leaving me with a dent exactly like yours.

Eventually went to Halfords, whose fixer came to the house and fixed it for GBP135. An absolutely perfectly dent removal, imperceptible to eye or hand ,(he eased out as much as he could and filled the rest) and perfectly matched Sahara Beige paint (all done by computer once he had the paint code).

So can thoroughly recommend Halfords' service, whoever does it for them!

Thanks for everyone's responses, I've booked the Octavia in with "New again" Chelmsford. From the posts I've read as ChipsAway are franchised the proficiency and experience of the technicians varies a fair bit.

If they can't fix it it will have to go to a Skoda dealer to get it sorted. Although I've got the details of the person who crashed the door into mine I was trying to avoid a £350 (quote from Skoda dealer) bill for them and going through their insurance.

Thanks again

But of course a Skoda dealer won't do the job themselves - they'll have a franchiser come in once a week to do all their little bodywork jobs together. Believe our local dealer (Canterbury) uses Chipsaway (tho' I might be mistaken....)

Hi Martin

I found a smilar dent on the front passenger door of my vRS two weeks ago, I took it to a local dent removal franchise who said it was directly over the impact bar. All he did though was to heat the door with a heat gun which melted the mastic bonding the impact bar to the skin so that he could get his tool between the two, dent came out no problem.

Stokey

As said before, a dealer will have a man that visits every so often, so its likely it will be the same guy! A main dealer body shop will prolly fit new door skin and do lots of spraying, the end result will prolly be you wishing you'd left the dent.

I would suggest having as little done as possible, even if it means a shallow "ripple" being left behind.

there is another technique using a slide hammer. Basically they use hot melt glue to stick a rubber thing with a hook onto the dent and then use a slide hammer specially designed to pull the dent out. It's called glue pulling. Have a look http://www.dingking.com/user_pages/1_dent_glue_puller.shtml

Thanks for everyone's replies and responses they were very useful.

I took the car into "New Again" in Chelmsford and although the dent was near the side impact bar the guy still managed to get behind it and push the dent out. All that is left is a few tiny (1-2mm) blips which don't show unless you know where they are. Overall unless you knew where the dent was there is no sign of it. It cost £60 instead of the £85 they initially quoted and I would recommend them to anyone.

I found m0bov's comment interesting, I initially thought the Skoda dealership thought I was mad to consider spending £350 on a small dent (they weren't aware it was insurance that would be paying) but from m0bov's comment I think the dealers reluctance was due to the car being metallic silver and would never look 100% due to colour matching and blending in.

Thanks again to everyone for advice.

Martin
