Turbo Dynamics - Changes?

Featured Replies

So I e-mailed TD about hybrid's for the Fabia as I fancy a bit more oomph. Now I was under the impression a Stage 1 Turbo gave you 200-220bhp while a Stage 2 Turbo gave you 220-240bhp. However I got this reply. Stage 1 – MD374 Hi flow GT17 compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cut back turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 220 - 240 BHP Stage 2 – MD376 Hi flow GT20 spec compressor wheel, cnc machined compressor housing, 360 degree thrust bearing, cutnback turbine blades, lightening of turbine wheel for faster ‘spool up’, modified V.N.T. turbine housing, uprated turbine seals. Other ‘blueprinting’ modifications. APPROX 240-260 BHP The prices of buying those outright are £1045 ex vat and £1095 ex vat. I then asked about what if I sent my own turbo in to get refurbed, how much would that cost? "Hi John, The prices on there are for a brand new unit outright. We would only work on one you sent in if it was new or barely used. Kind Regards Martin Wright" Technical Sales The reply surprised me because I've seen some of the turbo's sent in for hybridising and they are not new. Where the hell is anyone gonna get a barely used GT1749VB these days?! Put my plans on hold seen as I'm not paying that much for a new one.

That was all spaced out nicely, god knows why it's bunched it all up.

It's because of the VNT mechanism.

Turbo dynamics have a policy of not hybriding older VNT turbos whilst some other companies will hybrid a unit regardless..

I see.

I was sure somebody said that they will hybrid them at £595. Maybe I'm getting my wires crossed.

I would think they are reluctant to hybrid used turbos due to poor reliability. There have been many failures.

my C R Turbos hybrid, whilst not as fancy as the TD was less than £900 for them to supply and hybrid a brand new turbo. I've heard they've recently started supplying their hybrids with cut back blades too. They also seemed way more friendly than TD when I was looking around for a new turbo

They'll gladly take your money and uprate a used turbo, but are trying to save you from the gamble. You're not going to be happy spending money on the upgrade and fitting, for it to blow or fail a few months later, from the increased strain the upgrade has put on it.

If you're going to do it, you're better off doing it properly. You don't get owt for nowt :)

That makes sense I guess.

However I've just bought a 312mm upgrade and a Forge FMIC so Santa will probably tell me where to go if I asked him for a hybrid.

Something to aim for next year :)

Cheers guys
