Featured Replies

How often should be changed? Mine have been on two years since bought new, recently got passed the 50500 mile mark and just wondering..

just for info:- Fabia Hatch 1.9TDi Elegance with Standard 14" wheels.

anyone care to recommend makes of pads and discs? costs?

Regards,

Depends entirely on how you use them. They don't really go off with age, so if you're light on them, they'll last a long time.

Discs should be changed once they're worn below a certain thickness (depends on car, normally specified in a service manual) or if they become 'blued' (which can occur if they're overheated by inappropriate use), warped or scored. Pads should be changed when they wear down, basically. Some modern discs either squeal or ignite a light on the dashboard when they're worn, but as a rule of thumb, I'd change them once they're down to 3 or 4 mm of pad material.

I tend to get through discs every 20,000, but I am a little heavy on them: I don't rely on engine braking, because brake discs and pads are cheaper than gearboxes.

On my old TDi FabiaI got to the 60,000 mile service (just under 3 years old) out of the brake discs on the front, original rears were still on it when I traded it in. I was quite surprised by this.

Front bumper was a bit knackered though from all the things I hit
