HI,

As its started getting seriously dark out there now i have noticed that my headlights 'lighting distance' is so poor compared to other peoples cars i get into.

I have adjusted the 'in car' 'light hieght' selcter. and its still bad even on max.

i did have a look for some kind of manual adjustment screw or way to move the actual housing but no luck.

so i have been looking at some driving lights http://www.amazon.com/KC-HiLiTES-634-Daylighter-Driving/dp/B0007O8S58

there quite expensive (to me anyway) and was wondering if anyone has actually used them, any suggestions?

I noticed with mine, as the lenses are plastic instead of glass as I have had on previous Skodas, that unless they are clean the distance is effected quite a bit. I just make sure they are as clean as they can be before any big journey's.

The switch on the dash only lowers the beam so you should leave that on the default -- setting.

Driving lights can only be used in conjunction with your main beams so of limited use.

All I can suggest is making sure you have the best road legal bulbs you can get, something like Philips X-Treme Vision. Also make sure your lights are clean and if the lenses are heavily scratched try some plastic scratch remover on them.

I must admit that whilst the beam pattern is good I find the Octavias lights quite poor.

I have glass lenses on mine and I have just had to replace one recently thanks to a indecisive dear in the road out of the road in the road out the road in the ro.... BANG! so its quite clean and not scratched. The lights were like this before as well its not a new issue after the lens replacement.

I was looking at some better bulbs and yes they are blatantly worth a try, but it does seem to be more of an angle issue like they are pointing at the floor to much. Is there a way to adjust the angle manually?

literally when I have to dip my beam I can barely see where I'm going and if there is oncoming traffic I cant see the road at all briefly as they pass.

if you try and adjust them yourself you could just make the situation far worse. Best bet is to find a friendly MOT place and ask them to do it correctly using the right tools. There is nothing like driving towards a car with misaligned headlights. The driver of the other car must think their great, but in reality they are dazling others.

Damp roads tend to reduce the effectiveness of the headlights, changing the bulbs to some of those +50% ones can make quiet a difference.

When I first had my A3 the lights were terrible. I fitted uprated bulbs, which helped a bit, but having the alignment checked and adjusted made loads of difference.

I also had a poor spread of light with my first Octavia,

but after some decent bulbs and some adjustment,

it turned night into day :)

It may be worth checking the condition of the reflector in the headlamp.

I have just had to replace mine for the MOT has a lot of the reflective coating had corroded off the plastic backing.

A new headlamp has made a real difference although I think I could improve things with some better bulbs.

Has anyone tried 100w versions in their Octy?
