squeaking brakes getting really really annoying (Vrs)..

Featured Replies

Hello...

I have just got a 2001 Octavia VRS and although pads are all ok the brakes squeak something stupid.

The car will literally squeak until it stops. Even people outside can hear it.

I had a Fabia VRS (well, still have it) and thats a 2004, again, no issues wuth wearing / worn pads and that has ALWAYS squeaked too.

It is worse in the Octavia though.

It is getting to the point that I am actually considering selling it for something else because it is driving me crazy and I am wondering if it is some sort of issue they are prone too?

Anyone got any advice??

I didn't realise that the 'mouse' came as standard...

Thank you

i had the same problem with mine untill i replaced the discs and pads, when i replaced them i gave the backings a good coating of copper grease and put the metal shims in on the back with the grease and its not squeaked a single bit in 5 months

The later design chamfered pads are supposed to help too

As said copper grease on the back of the pads and the sides of the pad backing where it fits into the caliper, the more the better. Just about cure mine.

Mine also squeeks at the rear very bad more so if its been raining (sounds like a train screaching on its tracks) not all the time though, I have been told at my last service that they were fine on the back and that they cleaned them...but it soon came back.

If you're using half decent pads, then you should definately not be using any copperslip!!

The correct pads have adhesive backs to them, and need to be stuck into the caliper. To make sure they stick well you should clean up the contact surfaces with some brake cleaner or white spirit.

The only parts of the pads that should be greased are the 'ears' where they contact the carrier. In which case use a decent grease like Mintex CeraTec.

Are your brakes squealing in forward or reverse, or both? Is it the front or rear brakes squealing?

Mine squeal a bit when slowing gently from 5-10mph, and moo in reverse...

On another website forum there are seven pages on why copper grease should NOT be used on the braking system. Indeed it has been found to be lethal as supported by scientic research.

If need be, only ATE Plastilube grease or Mintex CeraTec grease should be used. Calliper guide pin bolts should be lubricated with Castrol Rubber Grease as copper grease has been found to be detrimental to the rubber boots covering the guide pins. Copper grease should never be used anywhere near the ABS braking system.

This also applies to using copper grease on spark plug threads and glow plug threads screwed into aluminium heads.

Copper grease has long since been banned from my tool box.

The mooing in reverse is a common issue and gets worse in cold weather. Skoda released a revised Rear caliper bracket to fix this issue, some folks have been lucky enough to request this revsion bracket free when a service is needed. Not sure Skoda still carry out this for free now, but worth a go.

If you search the mooing issues you can get a more detail explanation to what it is and why it does it.

Re: My previous post on the use of copper grease, I forgot to add that copper grease is in fact made from a derivative of clay with copper filings and a dollop of lubricant added.

So it's just mud with glitter in it then really!!

Back to the topic of squealing...

I had a rear caliper that wasn't returning properly, causing loud squealing in reverse, and quiet squealing while travelling at low speeds forward. Caused the caliper to get very hot, and bubbled most of the paint off the caliper. New caliper fixed it, and i've since not heard a squeak!

I think mine's probably doing the same. I have one rear caliper that has paint bubbling on it and half suspected as much...
