Gearboxes interchangeable?

Featured Replies

Hi, my daughter has a 2000 Fabia Classic 1.4 8V which is great for a youngster - cheap insurance and a strong car if the worst happens, However the gearbox is getting noisy. The sticker in the boot shows this as type EMH. I have been unable to find one with this code but type FNK (from 2002 1.4 8v's) seem quite common. There appears to be many more codes than types (eg O2R) of gearbox in the (dreaded) Haynes manual so I am wondering if they are interchangeable? Can anyone advise please?

Thanks

Not sure, but I reckon you'd get more pf a response if you posted this in the Fabia 1 section

Thanks for your interest, actually I realised almost immediately that I had posted in the wrong forum and did a second one and cross referred it - however I have had no responses at all to that one as yet!

Hi, I have done exactly this change on my wifes 2000 1.4 8V, the original gearbox was code EMH which developed a noisy 5th gear ( on stripping it was found to have shed a tooth from 5th gear) I replaced the gearbox with a later FNK, which externally is identical the only difference I could find was looking at the VAG CAT website which identifies slightly different gear ratios in mid range gears only, from memory 1st & 5th are still the same. On the road the difference is not discernable ( such is the neck breaking pulling power of the 8v!!!!) Only tip I would advise is to take off the 5th gear end cover of any replacement box and check the tightness of the 5th gear and mainshaft gear retaining nuts they all seem to be prone to coming loose which causes wear to the shaft splines over time. Hope this helps regards
