window wipers not working

Featured Replies

Guys and girlies a wee query i wish to share with you.

Tonight i went out to put screen wash in the car and as i went to sweep the front wipers to clear the excess rain that had fell they wouldn't work. Only the rear window wiper would work. I checked as maybe the wipers were frozen onto the screen due to the cold weather however they were moving in my hand. After turning the car off and then re-starting the problem wouldn't clear. However, i drove the car out the driveway and as i was moving back, i lifted the switch upwards and presto they worked and have been fine ever since.

Does any1 have any suggestions as to why this may have been the case or has any1 had any similar experience of this. The car is a 57 plate pd with only 10000 miles on the clock if that helps. emoticon-0124-worried.gifemoticon-0183-swear.gif

They don't work if the bonnet is up.

Too cold? Is there a cutout if the wipers are frozen?

dsr the bonnet was shut at the time so that rules that option as to why out. Any other idea's? possible too cold is a good suggestion and im hoping it's the right answer. however 3 days later on from the complaint they work beautifully.

A wee question though. Does the octy vrs have a heated front windscreen as it takes bloody ages to defrost and demist the front screen in the mornings.

It may just be "one of those things" TM. If it happens regularly, worry about it. The problem with modern cars is that there's so much electronics and software in them that can go awry every now and then for no reason other than there's been a glitch on the data bus. This means that everybody will suffer unexplained problems from time to time.

No, it does not have a heated front screen

and that is one thing I am going to miss when I P/X my Ford Focus ST in for a new vRS

its an amazing bit of kit and will defrost a screen covered in ice in 1 to 2 minutes emoticon-0148-yes.gif

If it happens again, open the bonnet again and close it. The switch might be not triggered. And might be after driving, because of the movement in the bonnet.

The heated front screen was patented by ford, that is why not many other makes offer them. Ford charge other manufacturers £200 per screen to use the technology on their cars, so basically getting their exclusivity through high prices.

As others have said an electrically heated screen is not available.

But VAG do offer electrically heated warm air demist. Many Audis have it in the UK but it is not availble for UK Skodas. The Scandanavian Octavias have it as an option I believe. I looked at fitting one from an A3 but it is rather expensive (several hundred £s) and also requires some heavy duty wiring. Shame really as my wife's Freelander GS has this and it is very good, and unlike an electrical windscreen it heats the interior too.

PS Dont even bother with those Peltier (ceramic) heaters that run from the lighter socket - they are hugely underpowered and thus useless. But they are cheap so lots of people buy them just to see if they are any good (like me).

I've had this happen twice, and i've found i've had to remove the fuse from the end of the dashboard and reinsert it to get them working again.
