Warm kettle water on the windows.

Featured Replies

Rather than Scrape, scrape.. squirt...scrape, scrape... wipe. I poor a (Not boiling) kettle of water down the rear and front screens, and mirrors / side windows if needed.

It's never boiling and also never having "just" boiled.. I always let it stand a bit to cool before taking it out.

The AA site says never use Boiling as it can damage the screen, they don;t say how though and if warm water is ok.

Is there any reason this could be bad for the car.. as in, going from very cold to quite warm instantly.. in short, Is something gunna crack?

I tell ya what though, Clear glass in seconds!

Rob :)

hello Rob,

Their has been a recent thread on this with many opinions. You seem to be guessing right in a way. Hot water on a cold screen could crack it due to thermal shock! What I normally do is to use luke warm water. When it is really cold I fill a garden watering can, mine holds about 2 gallons. I just poor it over all the windows and mirrors. Even in the coldest weather thais always worked without refreezing probably because of the quantity. I have never damaged a window. The results are instant.

What he said.

Don't boil it, just use a mixture of cold and hot from the tap and that will do just fine. Make sure you use plenty so you are warming the screen up and not just clearing the ice - that way it will stop it refreezing.

Oh , and let your girlfriend know you are doing this so she doesn't slip on the driveway when that freezes over. DAMHIKIJDOK

Thanks Anthony & Zoid.

Maybe I should move from kettle water to the hot tap.. although, by the time I've let the kettle cool they're probably pretty close.

So, maybe I shouldn't boil the kettle.. but stop it just as it goes quiet before the big bubble come! And then let it cool a bit too.

What I need is one of those laser thermometers.. lol!

Still boil the kettle! That way you can have a cup of tea while you're clearing the screens!

That OK Rob,

whats wrong with a can of de-icer?? :wonder:

I do this occasionally when its really bad... just with luke warm water... but turn the windscreen wipers on and leave em on! I did it once, went to put the kettle back and when i got back the water had frozen :giggle::rofl: so went back for the kettle

the mrs bought one of those £10 covers from halfords, works a treat on the front windows

Fair point, but didn't have one.. Plus, water's cheaper.

P.S. This thread moved while I was writing this.. Very confusing for the post editor, lol.. "NO_SUCH_THREAD" hehe!

It's cheaper , more effective and more environmentally friendly

Whooop! Post #15 and I'm the first smug git to mention I've got a heated screen that clears in seconds. :)

Most de-icers I've ever used cause smearing for quite some time afterwards - and there's nowt worse than smearing when you wipe !

Why use power to boil the kettle, only for it to cool down - use a mix of hot and cold so it's just off cold. Also if you have a squeegee to hand, use that when you pour the water on to prevent any refreezing.

Failing all that - you could always buy a Ford :o

How did you know that ?

Now where's that "wheeze" smiley :giggle:

I just boil a 1/4 kettle of water and top up with cold water until I can comfortably put my whole hand in and not feel it's "hot". :) Works fine.

An old curtain is even better as no water needed and you can take it with you and pop it over whilst at work = zero cost and dead easy

Also sometimes put as DAMHIKT!

What about the side and rear windows? Screen covers do their job very well but they normally only cover the front screen. By law the other widows also need to be clear. Perhaps it is back to the old fashioned car cover. Blankets are OK when it freezes over but sometimes our fickle weather changes its mind when we are not about and turns to rain, the blanket is then soaked.

An auxiliary engine heater would do a very good job, can be put on a timer and will warm the engine at the same time. Drive away in comfort and prolong engine life at the same time.

I've lobbed a massive hessian'ish type cloth over the whole hood/screen of the MX tonight. Will see how clear it is tomorrow. B)

Watch out, Santa might tack the sacking away.
