1.9 Clutch Pedal

Featured Replies

Just got home in fourth gear with no clutch.

About 3 miles from home I pulled away from a junction and went to change in to second, when I pressed the clutch for the gear change the pedal just went to the floor. There was a sound like a plastic peice breaking or being stripped of teeth.

Once home, I pulled the clutch pedal up and some plastic bits fell on the floor.

Can anyone tell me what has broken and what the problem leading to this may be?

1.9 SLXI turbo Diesel, S reg 195K miles. It's never had or needed any work on the clutch.

There's a little plastic widget on the pedal that breaks.

So why do they break (There's a few clutch changes in 195K miles) there must be something that causes it?

Cheap and easy repair I hope. Does anyone have a part number as I will no doubt have to order it?

Hi, check the clutch pedal itself. Theres a small bracket ( holds the cable end in place) which may have given way and `popped` a weld or two. Its only spot welded and considering the pressure it has to withold should really be seam welded in my opinion. It happened to mine and required a call to get recovered. I took off clutch pedal and had it welded at a local engineering shop. £10 bung did the trick.

Had this happen to my 2001 TDI Ambiente with around 136k on the clock at the time. I bought a new pedal and plastic clips from TPS - cost around £23 for the parts. Not a bad job to do - a bit fiddly. The worst bit is refitting the return spring.

There is a really good 'how to' on uk-mkivs.net forum as this is a common issue on Golf's and Bora's.

It must be more common than i thought. You would think v.a.g.. would have better quality part. Yes, i agree a fiddly job allright...................i remember being squashed upside down with the drivers seat as far back as poss and still got carpet burns on my shoulder trying to re-fit return spring...... emoticon-0136-giggle.gifemoticon-0136-giggle.gif lol

common fault on all vag cars, maybe the pedal, maybe just the clip that holds it to the master cylinder its like a U shape white plastic one, part number for the clip 1H0 721 357 and the pedal 1J2 721 319 C,

It's the welds that fail on the small box section on the top of the clutch pedal which causes the white plastic 'u' shape clip to break when the clutch is depressed. At the age/mileage of the subject vehicle, it has lasted well in comparison to mine!

It's been too c old to do masses of investigation however I have some plastic U shaped peices that I picked up off the floor. I will try my Skoda agent tomorrow for the parts.

Thanks for the posts.
