Creaking Dash

Featured Replies

Since this very cold weather my dash has developed a creak whenever there is bump/undulation in the road surface, gets better once car interior warms up but doesn't go away completely.

Seems to be coming from climate/radio area but trying to locate by pressing the dash about by hand or holding dash while driving fails to eliminate the problem or find the exact area.

Now I should take it to the dealer but am worried that they could make it worse or even start another rattle.

Any ideas apart from cranking the radio up?

Check the auto dimming mirror and/or light and rain sensor pod behind it. The little button was rattling away to itself on mine but it sounded like it was coming from the dash, car interiors make for odd acoustics.

Also try taking the ashtray out to see if that is the cause.

Drop the glovebox and see if that helps and also make sure it isn't the little cubby on top of the dash, mine goes through phases of rattling every now and again, a whack usually cures that one :giggle:

I would just put up with it. This weather will soon pass....

I would guess in this extreme cold the whole dash has contracted a little bit...it has been a sustained amount of constant freezing temps.

Also check where the rain sensor housing meets the windscreen - since the start of the cold weather mine starting rattling like mad - a small folded piece of paper between the two has cured the problem!

Got something similar. Try the speedo unit (dash pod?) my fabia vrs and now my new octavia vrs sometimes creak. Also I used to get a creak from the dash where the door meets the dash, specifically the rubber heating vent seal. I used to use some dash cleaner on the plastic and the rubber, used to shut it up. As already mentioned tracking down these noises is a real pain due to the car acoustics. I had what sounded like a rattle from the passenger door, turned out to be glasses in the sunglasses holder.

Try the cubby holder on top of dash, pressing around the frame might simulate the noise.

mine has creaked since i owned mine, when i go over bumps, or if the air con goes on and it cools down, or if i heat the car up it creaks then, basically finds an excuse to make a noise.

its annoying with me having coilover suspension to as the impact on small bumps is alot harsher.

might sound daft but try the fusebox covers at each end of the dash, one of mine wanted re-seating and it got rid of a creak in the centre console

We had a creak when we originally got our Octavia and it was the radio surround trim - I got rid of it by changing the trim to a silver one.

Also if you have the auto dimming rear view mirror the tube from the headlining to the screen mount can rattle and creask - just tuck the top end behind the headlining...

I'm sure VW make Skoda 'engineer in' a few more creaks and rattles than the VWs and Audis have.... ;)

Better than adding rattly bits to the doors like all the Escorts were fitted with as standard back in the day :-P...

A friend of mine cured a creaking dash by replacing a missing bolt in one of his engine mounts :-O - it was on a longitudinal engine mounted Passat though, and the creak was permanently there rather than linked to cold weather, so probably not your problem :-)...
