Driving Standards

Featured Replies

Driving standards are a lot poorer now, and less police on the road to control them :(

I'm sorry but getting poorer? 9 times out of 10 its an old fart that gets in my way. :wonder:

Yep -there goes courtesy and patience ,as well ( or perhaps the old ,as you put it ,fart) , is the angel ,as in fools rush in . :wonder:

But I do agree ,and it's all ages -I'm getting on ,and some of the wrinklies seem to have forgotten how to drive ,whilst I find that if I'm tailgaited it's usually some young kid ,who thinks that his car will stop immediatly ( and doesent see why I've left a bigger than average gap in front) ot fails to realise that with years of experience ,my reactions are natural .

Bus lane doesnt jump any traffic at all, goes thru the middle of the shops where all the bus stops are (no normal traffic) and comes out as a T junction where said car blocked the lane. Cant see how this would be causing someone to block it on purpose.

I think it's more the principle of the thing!

The standard of driving is not getting worse, but its not getting better, idiots that don't have common sense. If an old persons reactions are not sharp enough they should not be on the road end of. With the high percentile that think fogs are for the use in snow and rain, "the 40mph brigade" and the "you'll just have to wait till I pull over mob". Years of experience have a big impact on driving style but so do years of bad habbits and the very people that moan about driving standards forget this. No one is a perfect driver... (except me)

The main problem here in Central Scotland, is there appears to be one speed limit, 40MPH People do 40 no matter what road they are on.

A lot of people do this everywhere, but at least in Scotland there's sometimes a place to overtake.

I'm a firm believer that it corresponds with issues in modern society - it's the me me me first generation.

+1 to that for sure.

Without FLAMING -says a lot about the perception of modern day standards . In my day -all drivers were considered idiots -till proved otherwise .Me - I regard myself as an average driver , despite being on the roads for 43 years ,with max NCB ,AND NIL points .,despite being a driver looking to make "good progress "-something not liked by the current road "safety " people .

I consder it not luck ,but skill . I'm not a perfect driver - and that's what makes me a safer driver -not the 'safety " cameras, and the safety blurbs about speed .

I hate the auto-brakers. Uh-oh, corner coming up - must brake regardless of current speed, visibility and sharpness of corner.

agree totally usually on a national speed limit ususally doing about 30mph :wall:

Then answer me this -how come ,on council estates ,I can spot a car ,usually travelling too fast for the road (given ther'e usually a few toddlers out and about, an wall to wall chav parked cars) and see somewhere to pass ,long before the other one -.Another one - at 30 ,when conditions prevail -I can loose most tailgaiters in town traffic ,by looking ahead ,and using the thing they won't have -Experience and judgement .I don't have to drive fast in towns to loose said idiot .And on the open road -not so long ago had someone in a Mini Cooper S have problems keeping up with Furball - oh they wanted to -could see that by the corner cutting, and lurching . They did pass ,on a long straight, with my help ( thats what good driving is about -let idiot get in fronrt and out of way -Nes't pas)

And I'm only a kid -63 next birthday .Not so long ago someone talked to me in horror about a car driving 48 miles in about 48 minutes - that's aftyer the road was upgraded from single track to single carriageway .I didn't tell them that about 40 years ago ,I used to do it regularly in 50 minutes and then it was single ( very much so single) track .And that was in Austin A40 .

i think standards are regional, believe it or not i think the standard in central london, from those that deal frequently with city traffic and hazzards are generally better than average, people being more alert and even courteous! :)

depends what is meant by 'better' i s'pose!

If the police actually patrolled roads rather than ANPR and scamera vans, then poor drivers would be repremanded there and then and become educated long term.

Unfortunately - POLICE ,IN CARS,COST MONEY - IN SHORT SUPPLY IN BROWNS BRITTAIN -Where the emphasis is on generating cash from crimes ,not SPENDING MONEY to reduce Crime . :giggle::giggle:

The decline started with the Tories, just like their local councils if you've had the pleasure.

Labour simply fudged the gap in policing without increasing funding needed by other means - PCSO, Scamera revenue to local authorities (so they'd install more) etc etc
